Earlier this week, the cheaper Microsoft Surface tablet was spotted at the FCC and the sighting gave some details about the upcoming device. Now, it seems that some of its specifications have been revealed by sources.
The affordable Microsoft Surface Tablet will be powered by less powerful processors than the Intel Core i5 and Core i7 chips found in today's Surface Pro models. The cheaper Microsoft Surface will be powered by Pentium processors, according to WinFuture sources. The cheapest model will have a Pentium Silver N5000, while the slightly more expensive version will have the Intel Pentium Gold 4410Y or the Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y
The Intel Pentium Silver N5000 is a quad-core chipset x86 which is part of Intel Gemini Lake series and it has a basic clock speed of 1.1 GHz. The Pentium Gold 4410Y is a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, while the 4415Y Gold is slightly faster at 1.6 GHz. Both Pentium Gold chips are based on Intel's Kaby Lake architecture. Apparently, Microsoft used Pentium Gold chips for slightly more powerful models because of thermal constraints.
If these specifications are accurate, consumers should not expect affordable Microsoft Surface tablets to be powerful machines. This should not be a problem for many users since Microsoft aims to sell these cheaper models to students. These processors should be more than enough to take notes, search for videos online and streaming, as indicated by Engadget.
The FCC filing earlier this week confirmed that the Surface tablet would have a Qualcomm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth autonomous module. This is further evidence that the affordable tablet can be powered by an Intel processor and not a Qualcomm processor.
Earlier reports claim that the less expensive Microsoft Surface tablet will have a 10-inch screen, smaller than 12-inch Surface Pro models. Since the device will be smaller than the Pro model, it should be 20% lighter. The display on the device is said to have rounded corners. It is also said that the tablet comes with a USB Type C connector.
The rumored starting price of the affordable Microsoft Surface Tablet is about $ 400. The new device is aimed at students, but Microsoft also wants it to be in direct competition with Apple's iPad models. The last time Microsoft took out a tablet for students was three years ago and it was Surface 3, which has already been discontinued, according to The Verge.
