Founded in 2015, Lobe manufactures an AI tool that allows developers to create customized deep learning models for their applications without having to write code. The team plans to continue to develop Lobe as a standalone service for multiple platforms.

Microsoft has acquired Lobe, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence technology company, for an undisclosed amount.

"Lobe's simple visual interface allows people to easily create smart apps that can understand hand gestures, listen to music, read text, etc.," writes Kevin Scott. President and Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft.

Developing models of AI and deep learning are usually "slow and complex processes, even for experienced scientists and data developers," Scott said. Lobe – and Microsoft – want to change that.

Scott echoed this sentiment, claiming that Lobe's technology would put "the development of AI in the hands of non-engineers and non-experts."

This is the third major purchase of Microsoft related to the AI, after the acquisition of Semantic Machines in May and Bonsai in July. Semantic Machines, based in Berkeley, California, manufactures an "AI conversational" technology that allows users to interact with robots using a natural language that goes beyond simple commands and queries. Bonsai, also based in Berkeley, Calif., Is setting up a "deep reinforcement learning platform" that allows companies to integrate AI into industrial control systems.
