In February of this year, Microsoft drew bold lines for its Office support plans by limiting the time it takes to support Office 365 ProPlus on different versions of Windows and the Office 2016 running time with Office 365 services. But on September 6, Microsoft reversed course on these controversial movements.

Earlier this year, Microsoft officials said they would no longer support Office 365 ProPlus on Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2016 and earlier, and on any Windows 10 Long Term Maintenance Channel (LTSC) as of 14 January 2020. Windows 8.1 will continue to be supported and corrected by Microsoft until January 10, 2023. Windows Server 2016 is still supported until January 11, 2027.
Office 365 ProPlus, available only through a subscription license, comes with locally installable mobile apps such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access, Publisher, Skype for Business, OneDrive for Business, and Office.
Microsoft's argument was that these restrictions "would ensure that Office and Windows receive regular, coordinated updates to provide the most secure environment with the latest features."

Today, however, based on customer feedback, Microsoft officials have stated that Office 365 ProPlus will continue to be supported on Windows 8.1 to January 2023, end-of-support date for Windows 8.1 . Office 365 ProPlus will continue to be supported on Windows Server 2016 until October 2025, which is still insufficient for the end date of 2027 support for Windows Server, but five years longer than the February deadline.

We will support Office 2016 on Windows Server 2016 until in October 2025. Microsoft also said earlier this year that as of October 2020, users will have to run Office 365 ProPlus or Office 2019 customers to continue to connect to the Office 365 main services. Office 2016, which remains supported by Microsoft until 39, in 2025, would no longer work from October 2020, they said.

But still today, based on customer feedback, Microsoft will continue to allow Office 2016 customers to work with Office 365 core services until October 2023.
Office 2019, the "perpetual" version, without subscription, Office applications, is about to be released this fall. As a reminder, instead of providing five years of consumer support and five years of extended support to Office 2019, Microsoft will provide five years of general support and approximately two years of extended support to align with the end date of extended support for Office 2016 (which is October 14, 2025).
