Microsoft has confirmed that it is no longer developing touch-based versions of Office for Windows applications
The Word Mobile, Excel Mobile and PowerPoint Mobile apps found in the Microsoft Store first appeared on Windows 8.1, and development continued with the release of Windows 10. But now, this is changing, with Microsoft wanting to focus on Win32 , Web, iOS and Android versions instead.

Although Windows versions of Office Touch editions are not yet removed, you should not expect to find new features in the near future. Microsoft stops developing applications and focuses its attention elsewhere.
In a statement made to Verge, Microsoft said:
We are currently prioritizing the development of iOS and Android versions of our apps. and under Windows, we give priority to the Win32 and Web versions of our applications.
The decision is a little surprising given that Microsoft has been trying to encourage other developers to produce UWP applications. But when it comes to Office, it's the desktop version that is by far the most popular, so redefining priorities makes a lot of sense. What this means for Surface Hub 2 remains to be seen. Unable to run the desktop software, this could mean that a move to a Web version of Office is possible.
