Motorola's Lenovo division did not have a great year in 2018, but that does not stop the company from marketing Moto-branded phones. A new rumor claims that Motorola is working on a new flagship Android phone, powered by the new generation of Qualcomm's SoC.
A source says the upcoming flagship product is currently codenamed "Odin" and could even be called Motorola Moto Z4, according to XDA Developers. The source also indicates that the Motorola "Odin" will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150, which would have presided over the successor of the Snapdragon 845 platform.
Snapdragon 8150 is thought to be manufactured on a 7 nm process and will include a dedicated neuronal processing unit (NPU). The processor consists of 4 "Silver" and 4 "Gold" cores with a tri-cluster processor configuration. It is said that the configuration consists of 4 "small", 3 "large" and 1 "first" processors. The mobile platform should also have Qualcomm's new aptX Adaptive Encoder. The Snapdragon 8150, also called Snapdragon 855, could be announced next month, according to Android Headlines.
It is thought that the basic configuration of Moto Z4 "Odin" comes with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Higher RAM and storage configurations may still be in development. The source said Motorola is also working on software that would create a fingerprint sensor embedded in one of its upcoming phones. However, it is unclear whether the Moto Z4 will have a built-in fingerprint scanner.
It is also thought that Motorola is developing its new flagship Android phone to support Moto Mods – accessories that are attached to the back of smartphones to add new features. It is still unclear whether the next device will support older Moto Mods or whether it will require a brand new compatibility requirement.
What is certain is that this "Odin" phone will be compatible with the next Motorola Moto 5G Mod, announced in August alongside the Moto Z3. It also means that "Odin" will be equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem. The 5G Moto Mod still has no release date, but Motorola has announced that it will go on sale in early 2019. The 5G Moto Mod is also compatible with the Verizon 5G network in the United States. Z4 will be released in the country exclusively by Verizon, as will the Z3.
