Earlier in the day, I was talking to a fellow trainer during a Mewtwo raid on Pokémon GO (I launched 9 great balls without a hitch, so good news out there. He had driven to the city for the community day when he saw something exciting on his neighboring screen: the silhouette of a thrusthe had not yet looked like the various and changing Unowns. He left his path to get the thing: it would have been late for the community day, but a new thrustdex entry is a new thrustentry dex. When he found it, however, he was greeted by an extremely bizarre new creature, labeled "???" which has turned into an idem on the take. He was intrigued, but certainly not happy.
That was probably the experience of thousands of coaches around the world when they saw what this new thing was called: Paul Tassi called it Dittonut. Considering that they are all transformed into Idem, it is, at the technical level, an idem. But Ditto imitates others Pokémon, which means that there is always a new form of Pokémon or Pokémon represented here. At first, I thought it was a bug, but now I'm not so sure anymore. On the one hand, it would be a complex, multi-stage bug, and if that were the case, Niantic would probably have already caught it. There are also brilliant and non-glossy variants in the game code, making the idea of creating placeholders less likely. By far the most convincing proof of this fact is that, to a certain extent, the thrustmy is so strange that it's hard to imagine doing it on purpose. Klefki looks very clever.
Yet, something is clear with that. Global Marketing Manager for Pokémon GO Kento Suga tweeted a picture of the creature accompanied by a simple "???". This does not seem to be the kind of thing you do for a technical mistake.
So I'm waiting for this mystery of Dittonut to continue a bit before reaching its conclusion, which, I hope, will be an official announcement. The dominant theory is that it has something to do with a future thrustmy game, whether it's Pokémon Let's go Pikachu and Eevee or the next main RPG Switch. The first two games would make sense: they are meant to be deeply integrated into Pokémon GO, so to announce a new Pokémon in the mobile game before launching it with the Switch games would be logical.
There is a precedent to reveal Pokémon outside the main role plays. Fans of the show and anime will remember Togepi, who was revealed for the first time in the anime before entering Game Boy games. It was an important gesture at the time, firmly establishing the identity of Pokémon as a crossmedia franchise.
Regardless, the game appearance of the creature followed by official recognition makes it much less likely that it is a placeholder. It's a real mystery, though, and there's something fun about it: the game has not seen it since people were looking for Ditto and Mew well before their release, and the conclusion of this mystery was just that Niantic was going from the front. and released Ditto and Mew. This is an intentional question mark – three of them, I guess – thrown into the community, the kind of thing you see in other games, but that Pokemon GO has not really delivered yet.
Expect more news about it soon: Niantic has promised more surprises after the announcement of Mewtwo, and that really matters. It was a great summer for Pokémon GO, and it seems that the developer is preparing solutions to keep this momentum down.
In the meantime, rejoice if you are looking for an Idem, I suppose.
