Principled Technologies has released an updated version of its controversial processor performance tests. Originally, Intel had asked the company to validate its claims that the Core i9 9900K would be "the best gaming processor in the world," but the competing Ryzen 7 2700X was set up erroneously, which resulted in asymmetrical results.
In the first tests, Principled Technologies set up Ryzen Threadripper chips in game mode to accurately test their performance. This is in line with AMD's recommendations, as pseudo-inheritance allows mega-core chips to more efficiently allocate memory resources for gaming and does not prevent gaming engines from running more games. tasks they can not handle.
Unfortunately, for reasons of consistency, Principled Technologies had left the game mode enabled when testing the standard Ryzen 7 2700X. In the same way, the number of cores of the 2700X has been reduced by half, which has reduced gaming performance in almost all areas. The company has now apologized and updated the reference numbers using the default creator mode for all AMD processors tested.
This new version of the Principled Technologies report can be viewed online now and has a reduced performance lead for Intel's new Core i9 9900K, though it may still be the fastest gaming processor of its kind. It was after all the objective of the test, as Intel told me this week. At the launch ceremony in New York, she wanted the 9900K to be legally called "the best gaming processor in the world," with benchmark data to support.

Intel has also offered a new statement, happily repeating its performance of 9900K.

Intel's victory is not as complete considering the results published outside the game mode. Indeed, the game performance of the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, associated with a Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, have not stopped 'increase. In many cases, the performance delta between Intel and AMD octa-core processors has dropped by more than half.
But it's still clear that Intel's Octa-Core has a competitive advantage over the game. However, since the 9900K will probably cost twice as much as the 2700X, you can expect that it will. With the type of high resolutions that people spend on both an eight-core processor and a GTX 1080 Ti, the frame rate delta will further shrink.
Interestingly, it is not only the AMD results that have moved from the initial report to this updated report. It seems that Principled Technologies has returned and tested some of the Intel chips again, as many of the reference points have been changed. In the case of Fortnite, the difference is huge, the performance of the 9900K i9 decreasing by about 24%.
We do not know yet why Intel's results have been changed, but we contacted Intel to get an answer.
In addition to the actual results, Principled Technologies also brought more transparency to the actual testing methodology and platform configurations of the different processors. More importantly, he explained in detail how motherboards and memory were configured, and one of the main concerns of people – the timing of memory – was clarified. On the Intel side, it used XMP configurations, and on the AMD side, it used equivalent DOCP settings to provide optimal relative memory timings.
Of course, these are still the results of a paid calibration session commissioned by Intel – and only the performance difference in 1080p as well – but it is in Principled Technologies' interest to make the results as transparent and unbiased as possible . He does not want to break with AMD, for whom he has also worked in the past. Although it is likely that the red team will be assigned this task in the future is rather unlikely at the moment.
