The new iPad Pro is on its way, it looks like, and may be announced this month.

Could the next iPad Pro look like this?@OnLeaks

But a new report at 9to5Mac indicates there is more known to the device. Some of it is, frankly, surprising, but let's go with those frown-inducing suggestions and see where they lead us, huh?

The eagle-eyed developer Guilherme Rambo has revealed that, according to his sources, there is a lot more detail revealed than before.

Face ID, But No Notch

Okay, so we've thought about it. After all, the iPhone has gone to face recognition in such a game-changing way that it's hardly likely the next iPad would have settled for fingerprint recognition, right? Mr Rambo says, though, that the size of the iPad can not be compared to the size of the screen.

Okay, straw poll: hands up, how many people have used an iPhone X or more recent? What, nobody? Seriously?

Even so, thin bezels and no notch sound even more delicious. An edge-to-edge tablet is coming, it seems, which is fantastic news.

Face ID, Any Way Up

Rambo also says that, unlike the iPhone XS and XR, the next iPad Pro will be able to recognize your face in landscape orientation as well as portrait. If true, and I believe it is, it also indicates the direction of the next iPhone.

But for now, it'll just be a heck of a lot more convenient to get you started.

Apparently it will not work upside down.

Nightmare.

Oh, okay, that's right, nobody needs it to work upside down.

Face ID setup, incidentally, will still be conducted in portrait orientation, you semi-recumbent rebels, you.

Wi-fi And Wi-fi Plus Cellular

No real surprise here, the iPad Pro will be available in wi-fi only and wi-fi plus cellular versions. The code numbers Rambo has been identified by both. In other words, there will be two possibilities in each screen size (likely 11in and an even bigger version, 12.9in).

New Connections: USB-C

The new model will have a USB-C connector, not Lightning. I'll be honest, I still have problems understanding this move because it's so much worse, it's pretty much always being iPhone first, iPad second. Maybe it's different with connections, if you're going to change the cables you need a device, it's best to start with the machine that has the smaller installed base.

The advantages of USB-C include fast charging (though a USB-C to Lightning cable can also achieve this) and the 4K HDR video to external displays facility. Part of the move to make the iPad Pro a replacement computer, perhaps, or a cord-cutting TV multimedia powerhouse?

New Connections: Magnetic Connector

Again, I'm surprised by this but maybe that's my lack of imagination. The Smart Connector is one of the most popular smartphones on the market. Oh well, if you say so.

New Connections: Apple Pencil 2

This is for me the most intriguing possibility. No sooner has the regular iPad gained support for the Apple Pencil, but a new, improved Pencil is suggested for the new iPad Pro. New features include pairing by proximity, as happens with AirPods now, for instance, rather than sticking to a Lightning connector on the iPad's base.

The Apple Pencil is one of the most elegant Apple accessories ever, so to improve it is a burdensome responsibility, but exciting, too.

As I mentioned, I think the next Apple iPad Pro will be released soon. Not long to find out what's true and what's rumor …
