New mechanics make this game the most hardcore of the series

[ad_1]

Mario Tennis is my favorite Mario style sports games. Each iteration of the series brought a ton of fun gameplay and mixed with an over-the-top action. Even when the franchise was at its lowest (Ultra Smash) the gameplay was always among the best in the franchise and easy to pick up.

Mario Tennis Aces, the Nintendo Switch series debut, seeks to change things. Not only is a new story mode included, but mechanics and gameplay are more akin to a fighting game than to a sports game. But do the changes make a better experience?

NEW MECHANICS / GAMEPLAY

Each addition to the Mario Tennis series evolved the gameplay in some way, but Mario Tennis Aces boosts action and intensity to a new level.

There are always three different types of shooting (slice, top spin, flat) and players can still perform lobs and drops that force your opponent to frantically run around the field to hit the ball, but the new mechanisms are where things become interesting.

Each player has a charge counter Mario Tennis Aces this can be filled in three different ways. Reload your shot while you wait for the ball to reach you, loot or block your opponent's area (we'll get back to it) to fill your energy meter even faster.

So what is the purpose of the meter? To make the above area plans and special plans. These blows unleash powerful blows with an impressive goal. Players can also slow down the time to catch the balls that they normally would not reach or increase their chances of blocking them. However, the use of slowdown quickly reduces the load on your drive, so you will need to use it sparingly.

Pick-ups are another new mechanism that can help players defend hard-to-reach shots while charging the energy meter. By simply pressing the right analog stick, players can flip, slide or slide on the ball at a good distance. However, timing is the key. Do it too late and you will miss it; do it too early and you will damage your racket. This is a valuable tool as it works as a defensive measure while catching your opponent off guard.

Zone shots and special shots may seem unbeatable, but players can learn to block those unnecessary shots by swinging the racket just as the ball is about to hit them. It requires precise timing, so slowing down is a great way to position yourself and hit the ball at the right time. It's probably the most difficult mechanic to master, but with the time and hard work, no matter who can reduce the time.

Another new mechanism during matches is the vulnerability of snowshoes. Each racket can be weakened if a player performs a rigged shot too early or misses the timing of an attempt to block. Each racket breaks after only a few of these mistakes, and if a player misses rackets, he loses the match automatically, regardless of the score. This is an interesting ride that the game adds to the games and gives the players another thing to think about. Does a player have to make a block and risk breaking a racket or just letting it pass?

The meter is the most important aspect in Mario Tennis Aces and makes every game look like a fighting game. It focuses on the placement and how you hit the ball how fast you can charge your meter and when and how you use it.

Certainly, these new mechanics are very intimidating and complicated. Mario Tennis Fortunately, the previous online tournament demo has helped me gain a better understanding of the mechanics before the official release, but that's the Adventure mode that really deserves to be commended for me. to have learned how to really play.

ADVENTURE MODE

Adventure mode, which is Mario Tennis Aces"Story Mode" is simple in its narration, but is a must for anyone trying to master all the new mechanics. The story follows an old tennis racket that has taken control of Luigi, Wario and Waluigi and seeks to dominate the world by bringing together the five Power Stones. It's up to Mario to go around the island and find them before them, but there are bosses and other obstacles on his way.

What makes Adventure Mode fun is that it gives players different ways to play. There are normal matches, but then you enter a mini-game where you have to use your shooting accuracy to hit enemies, continue a rally or other fun ways to play.

An RPG item is added to the adventure mode that allows Mario to level up and increase stats. This is mainly used to help players who can not seem to defeat a particular phase or dominate an opponent. Apart from this, the elements of RPG do not really take into account the game mode because it is ultimately your skill to use the new mechanisms that complete the story.

Boss battles are really fun. Although the defeat of each boss is the same, by hitting an area shot in an exposed area, everyone has a different attack and the time limits for stretched battles really bring a sense of intensity.

LACK OF MODES OF PLAY / DECISIONS QUESTIONS

Outside Adventure mode, Mario Tennis Aces does not offer too much in terms of game modes and content. There is a Swing mode that allows players to use joy like a tennis racket and there is local and online play.

Online Tournament mode is great and looks exactly like the demo. However, if you or your opponent's connection is not strong enough, it is almost unplayable. The promise of online tournaments to unlock new characters is intriguing, but until it is implemented in July, it's hard to say how successful they will be.

Simple Mode is there if the new mechanisms are too hard or not your thing, and is a great way for young players to jump in. But once the Adventure mode is over, there is not much to do if you are not online.

There are no characters to unlock (although the stages are unlocked in Adventure mode) to perform certain tasks and the mini-games you experience during the story can not be played with friends.

There are other questionable decisions like not being able to change the length of the matches beyond the best of the three formats. Although matches can last up to 15 minutes, and I guess Nintendo wanted online matches to run as quickly as possible, not having the opportunity to make a better match offline is interesting.

You can not choose the scene in offline modes either. In a way, the players stay on guard as they play on different terrains and against obstacles, but it seems stupid not to have the option to choose.

VERDICT

Overall, the basic mechanics of Mario Tennis Aces are the most competitive and tense of the series. Although not being child-friendly, its complexity makes matches more strategic and intense. Adventure Mode is an excellent learning tool and a must for anyone trying to master the new mechanics.

The lack of game modes, and just things to do in general, is a little disappointing but when the online connection works, the matches are great. And the possibility of content and updates, like online tournaments, should keep players busy for a long time.

Despite its flaws, the mechanics of Mario Tennis Aces Compensates with the most stylish and hardcore gameplay in the history of the series.
