A new Microsoft HoloLens helmet appeared in a NASA video this week. Spotted by VentureBeatNASA's reaction propulsion laboratory video reveals a new HoloLens helmet. The helmet includes a different visor at the front which seems to better support the glasses and a single adjustable band.
The Kinect sensor is not as visible at the front of the device and, overall, it seems much less bulky than the existing HoloLens model today. The video does not clearly indicate whether it is Microsoft's HoloLens 2 product or just a prototype of a HoloLens helmet tested by NASA. NASA was one of the first Microsoft partners on HoloLens and had previously tested the first prototypes of the augmented reality headset. It is likely to be just a prototype of the existing HoloLens helmet, rather than an entirely new device.
Microsoft is working on a second generation of HoloLens, codenamed Sydney. The new headset will be powered by an ARM-based processor and will include the latest Kinect sensor generation and a custom AI chip to improve performance. Microsoft is currently targeting an exit date of HoloLens 2 for 2019. We contacted Microsoft to comment on NASA's video, but the company said it had nothing to share.
