The updated file deletion and Internet connectivity loss reports for the Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Store applications went out. But users of some HP machines say they have seen the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) after trying to update their desktops and laptops.
"After installing KB4464330 (version 17763.55), my HP EliteDesk 800 G3 computer refuses to boot and ends with BSOD WDF_VIOLATION," wrote a user identified as "Mikael Sillman," who also learned that Dell's computers had been affected. The error code refers to a problem with the Windows driver structure.
A message posted on the HP Support Forum contained a similar story. "After performing the updates, this machine displays on the blue screen the error message" WDF_VIOLATION ", writes a person identified as" PhilBJSPC ". "I can not boot into safe mode and it does not allow me to do a system restore before the updates finish."
Microsoft's answer
When discussing the problem on the Microsoft Support Forum, it was suggested that KB4464330 conflicted with the HP HpqKbFiltr.sys keyboard driver file. Renaming the file is floating as a potential solution.
Microsoft removes the deleterious file deletion bug from the Windows 10 October 2018 update.
From the command prompt, you must navigate to the c: windows system32 drivers directories, and then rename the file – HpqKbFiltr.sys HpqKbFiltr.sys_old – and proceed with the reboot.
But in a discussion thread on the Reddit forum, say that editing the file does not solve the problem for some. The registry asked Microsoft and HP to comment, but there was no response.
The update debate has divided security experts on whether automatic updates are more problematic because incorrect code can lead to data loss.
"That's why automatically installed updates are so dangerous," Steve Bellovin, professor in the computer science department at Columbia University, commented on Twitter.
But Washington Post reporter Barton Gellman defended the automatic updates, saying they do more good than harm.
Alex Stamos, a former Facebook RSSI, said: "The release of automatic updates has been one of the few positives in consumer online security over the past five years, and experienced users and businesses will always able to disable the update mechanism., but the number of disasters is incredibly small compared to the benefit. Try to remember that the next time you have to fix an update that went wrong.
"We are aware of the information and are studying the issue further," said a spokesman for Microsoft.
On October 12, Microsoft announced the release of an update that removes an HP Keyboard Driver (11.0.3.1) from Windows 10 versions 1803 and 1809 due to problems.
"After installing the HP Keyboard Driver, version 11.0.3.1, via Windows Update, or if you have it installed manually, HP devices may experience a blue screen stop error: WDF_VIOLATION," explains notification of the company. "This driver has a known incompatibility with some HP devices on Windows versions 10 1803 and 1809."
Conclusion: HP users should be very careful and make sure that a full disk backup has been done before starting the update.
