Next Qualcomm Snapdragon 1000 detailed in new reports

Qualcomm may have a more powerful tour on PC, following new reports regarding a list of jobs and details associated with a Snapdragon 1000 SoC. The news follows earlier versions of a Snapdragon 850 SoC for PCs still in service and seems to indicate that the company plans to engage more directly in this sector of the market. Of course, it all starts with a list for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 and Snapdragon 1000 workstations. According to these lists, the company is looking for employees to work with these SoCs for desktop computers, HoloLens, audio, video, screens and cameras. At 20 x 15 mm, the Snapdragon 1000 would not be suitable for mobile use, which seems to indicate that the most likely use will be in desktop computers or other portable computing solutions such as computers portable.

However, it is also said that the chipset is a 12-watt socket design, which would bring it closer to Intel's U Series silicon and eliminate the need to install it directly on the motherboard. The competing chips have a 15-watt design but also occupy a much larger footprint at 45 x 24mm. The new design tests would be configured to support up to 16GB of LPDDR4 RAM and two 128GB Universal Flash Storage (UFS) drives. In addition, there has been some speculation about support for 5G networking, in addition to more standard connectivity hardware. All of these specifications would put the Snapdragon 1000 as a direct and alternative competitor to current and expected Intel chipsets. In particular, this may be a response to the expected Intel 5G designs.

Although nothing about the currently listed test specifications indicates that the tech giant is targeting upscale enthusiast consumer machines, the company seems to be moving in that direction. Any of these aspects could change between now and a final design, especially with Qualcomm actively seeking employees to work on it. There has been speculation that the chipset could be part of a hybrid mobile desktop OS project called "Andromeda". Meanwhile, the new information seems to place the Snapdragon 1000 on the run over the level occupied by Intel Atom or Y-Series processors. So, it may only be a matter of time before the competition between the two companies starts to really heat up.
