50 hz glory!
With the release of the PlayStation Classic next week, Sony unveiled some more details on the miniature console. The selection of the game can be considered as a source of division, but the real problem is reading on the machine. According to a recent article in the PlayStation blog, the classic will use PAL versions of nine games in all regions.
For those who do not know, the PAL standard operates at 50 Hz, unlike the NTSC standard of 60 Hz. This usually means that the games are held at lower frames to match the European standards of the time. That was a problem with PS2 games released on PS4 in Europe (where Sony has downloaded PAL versions). Upgrading to HDTV should have eliminated this regional difference, the default being 60 Hz for each region, but I guess the global launch has forced Sony's hand to European countries.
The following games will use PAL versions:
- Arena Toshinden Battle
- Cool boarders 2
- Derby of destruction
- Grand Theft Auto
- Flash jumping!
- Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
- Resident Evil Director's Cut
- Tekken 3
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
The worst offender has to be Tekken 3. Fighting matches live or die on their performance and the fact that the title takes place at a difference of five to ten frames can make the game more unplayable for some. I also question the choice to use the PAL version of Flash jumping, which requires smooth movements to avoid vertigo.
Whatever the reason, know that about 45% of the game selection will not play as you remember (unless you come from Europe).
