Nintendo files patent for Game Boy smartphone case

Nintendo has filed a patent for a phone case that would turn your touch screen into a Game Boy with functional buttons.

Siliconera discovered the design documents relating to the case, which had first been submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in March 2018.

Based on the images provided, the case would open like a book, the cover serving as a face to the Game Boy. The smartphone would set up on the lower layer of the case. When the case is closed, the view is limited to the classic screen of the Game Boy and the buttons are fully usable with the touch screen.

Like the original Game Boy, the box has buttons A and B, a directional pad, and start and select buttons. The L and R buttons of the Game Boy Advance are not present.

The Game Boy case would open on the entire screen of the phone, right.

Nintendo currently does not offer any Game Boy software for Android or iOS devices, but this patented shell could mean that retro pocket games are on the way. Nintendo jumped into the smartphone gaming market in 2016 and is enjoying phenomenal success right now. "Pokemon Go" was a global phenomenon since its launch in July 2016 and "Fire Emblem Heroes" has generated more than $ 400 million in global revenue since its launch in February 2017.

Nevertheless, it is important to take this news with a grain of salt. Businesses are constantly patenting ideas, and a very small number of them are emerging or making products that you can buy. Nevertheless, we were able to find that this smartphone deal was a bit striking, especially among Nintendo fans.
