But I'm misleading. A new Nintendo patent patent dating from today, identified by Siliconera, reveals that the video game company may be working on a Game Boy case for smartphones. At first glance, this will be a bin that will overlay a set of buttons on the screen – a touchpad, A and B buttons and start and select buttons – and will use a "window" to restrict the screen area to match roughly to the old Game Boys (at least as regards the aspect ratio).
This is both a good and a bad thing. The good news is that Nintendo is likely to officially release many mobile classics for the first time. It's not like Nintendo will develop and publish new titles for this device. No, it's just going to be the classics.
And as for the classics, another issue raised by this Nintendo device rumor is what will happen with the plethora of Game Boy emulators available on the Google Play Store, if any. already be made available for Android phones. The emulation falls into a legal gray area, but with the recent crackdown on ROM sites by Nintendo, we would not be surprised if the company was trying to extract popular emulation applications from the store. Why? Because these apps offer everything that rumor according to Nintendo could offer for years and years.
