Nintendo is preparing to release a new Switch console in the second half of 2019, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Citing vendors and others with "direct knowledge" of the projects, the newspaper reports that Nintendo is still discussing the features and materials to be included in the new model. According to the same sources, Nintendo could be ready to launch the console next summer.
The Nintendo Switch was released in March last year and if it sold just under 20 million units, its momentum slowed for the second year.
According to the Journal, a representative of Nintendo refused a request for comment and did not provide details about the possible difference between the new console and the Switch. Business Insider has contacted Nintendo for a comment.
Since the switch was launched only in 2017, an iteration of "new generation" would surprise some. The new model could be a similar upgrade to the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X. Sources told the Journal that an enhancement option could be the display, which could be rendered brighter, thinner and more energy efficient.
The Journal also indicated that the new switch would most likely share "many features" with the current model and that its software would also be compatible.
The release in late 2019 could introduce the new console right in front of the consoles of the next generation of its competitors. In June, Phil Spencer, Microsoft's director of Xbox, announced that the company's engineers were "architecting the next Xbox consoles," and media reports said the new console would be available in 2020.
