Nintendo has announced plans to edit an animation in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which presents an offensive representation of the Amerindians. The company said the decades-old reference did not reflect its current values.
The animation comes from Mr. Game & Watch, whose attacks are based on Nintendo's LCD games. Reset Era noticed the move, which comes from the 1982 Fire Attack cowboy game. In this game you defended a wooden fort of Native Americans wielding torches. The move was announced last week during the final presentation of Nintendo Direct for Smash Bros. Ultimate.
In a statement, Nintendo said it was already considering deleting the animation and that the one appearing in Direct was a mere oversight.
"Nintendo plans to distribute an update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that will remove the feather from the silhouette of Mr. Game & Watch," said a spokesman for Nintendo. "The original game on which this representation of the character is based was published more than three decades ago and does not represent the values of our society today.
"We sincerely apologize for the fact that this change has not been noticed in our marketing materials and we are continuing our work to make Super Smash Bros. Ultimate a fun and entertaining experience for everyone."
It would not be the first time Nintendo would edit Fire Attack to conform to the times. Upon the release of the Game Boy's Game & Watch 4 for Game Boy, the pen of Mr. Game & Watch's character was removed so that he no longer appears to be a Native American stereotype. This same treatment is likely here.
Smash Bros. Ultimate will be released on December 7 and Nintendo is planning a long post-launch period of additional characters, scenes and music as downloadable content. The director of the game, Masahiro Sakurai, recently said that these DLC plans were already defined.
