It took more than a year, but Nintendo Switch is finally exploiting its potential to become a versatile game. and multimedia device for your home. YouTube is now available on the system as a free application. Thanks to the kickstand built into the console, you now have another screen to watch your favorite videos.
As you might expect, YouTube on Nintendo Switch allows you to sign in to the same Google Account that you use on other platforms. The application itself is very fast and loads quickly, and the interface is almost identical to that of other devices like the Roku. Strangely, you can still choose a 1080p video resolution when you use the switch in portable mode, even if the built-in system screen is limited to 720p.
Phones and other gaming consoles may already be able to connect to YouTube, but thanks to its faster interface and touch-sensitive support, the switch is actually not a bad way to watch YouTube videos. While the system is getting more third-party versions and getting closer to the "main console" status in some homes, it goes without saying that some players might not have another way to watch YouTube so easily.
Nintendo Switch now has YouTube, but it still does not have other streaming services like Amazon Video or Netflix. Since Netflix is even available on the Wii, this seems like an unusual omission. This is one of the rare drawbacks of the system in 2018 – its game library is no problem, with acclaimed titles Super Mario Odyssey in the wild and highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in a month.
Hulu, however, is available. With Hulu's Live TV subscription option, this means that you can use your switch to watch your favorite live shows without the need of a cable operator. You can even use the Cloud DVR feature to record live broadcast times, then watch them later, or record matches from your favorite sports teams with the My Teams feature.
We will soon know how much consumers prefer to use YouTube on Nintendo Switch or whether they retain other existing options for viewing videos.
