While the Nintendo switch continues to create an impressive library of video games and is slowly starting to attract non-gaming applications to its suite of available software, the Nintendo devices of the previous generation are slowly starting to lose access to their devices. Streaming services, Nintendo begins to get rid regularly of Wii applications.
TechRadar reports that Nintendo is removing support for Wii streaming applications. This is because Netflix has sent a letter to Wii users to inform them that the app will no longer be available on the Wii starting January 31, 2019.
Netflix is not the only one leaving the repository of Wii applications. Other applications also leave the platform, including Hulu, Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime.
These services available on Wii will only affect the Wii. The Wii U will likely not be affected by these changes. So, if you still have the applications installed on the device, you will still be able to use them without any problem.
All of the Wii's deleted streaming apps coincide with the fact that Nintendo also closed the Wii Shop Channel early in 2019. All apps and online services will be closed.
However, this is not bad news if you are a fan of Nintendo. If you have already switched to the switch, you are in good hands with regard to some of the video streaming applications. There is Hulu, who launched the Switch in 2017 and is one of the first non-gaming applications that Nintendo has licensed on the Switch. Just recently, Nintendo managed to authorize the release of the YouTube application on the switch, which you can download now for free.
With Hulu and YouTube on the switch, rumors are beginning to spread that Netflix may soon also be on the switch. Since last year, several people have wondered about the streaming application appearing on the Nintendo Hybrid Console. But there were a lot of deviations every time the topic was discussed, mainly because, at the time, Nintendo wanted to focus on proprietary software and courting third-party studios. Efforts have come to fruition, with companies like Epic Games Fortnite and Psyonix bringing Rocket League, both of which support cross-play compatibility.
Thus, as Wii services begin to decline gradually, switch services begin to grow and develop. Netflix has not yet confirmed the release of Switch, but we know for sure that the streaming service – as well as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and all other major streaming applications – will no longer work after January 2019 with the original. Wii.
This was not a bad deal for the system, since it appeared a long time ago in 2006 and has been supported by these services for 12 years. Game consoles are typically supported for up to ten years, with the longest generation being the seventh, extending from 2005 to 2013.
As the Wii prepares to permanently end all of its services, do not be surprised that the Wii U will receive the same messages about application support in the near future.
