Twitter users on iOS have been hit by a strange bug today. Instead of receiving notifications including the tweet itself, they received an alphanumeric string. The problem only affected iOS users, it was confirmed with the company, and has since been resolved.
Twitter has been quick to solve the problem, following complaints from Twitter users about strange notifications.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced today at 12:42 pm ET that Twitter was aware of the problem and was working on a solution.
A few minutes later, he tweeted again that the problem was solved.
We asked Twitter for more details on what was wrong, because many people were wondering why the notification screen of their phone looked like this.
Some were also concerned that it was a security issue and did not know if the password reset was in order.
Twitter now says that the problem is just a bug – there is nothing to worry about.
The company has reported a tweet of its support channel (see below), which explains the problem in simple terms. It indicates that the bug was related to the code used for iOS notifications – especially the "red bubbles" (meaning the badges of the app icon).
Normally, this is not seen in "numbers and code," explains Twitter.
Or as @Jack says it in more technical terms: "We send an invisible background notification to the application with a number of badges (mainly unread notifications, DMs, etc.). The problem made these notifications visible for a short time. We do not know exactly why, but we quickly returned. "
