If you take a pass on Apple's new flagship phone, the iPhone XS Max, and are ready to jump to a big-screen Android phone – say the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the LG V30 or the next Pixel 3 XL – here are some tips to help you make the change.
Create a Google Account
If you do not have a Google Account yet, it's time to create one. On your Android phone, go to Menu> Settings> Accounts & sync> Add account> Google. Follow the on-screen instructions to link your Gmail account to your new phone.
You can also get a jump on creating a new Google account before getting your new Android phone. Just go to accounts.google.com and click Create an account.
Upload photos, contacts and calendar
You will definitely want to bring your photos and videos from your iPhone ($ 916 on Amazon Marketplace) to your new Android phone, with your contacts and calendar events. Fortunately, it's a kid's game with Google Drive.
If you do not already use the app, install Google Drive on your iPhone and sign in with the same Google Account that you will use on your Android phone.
Start Google Drive, press the button hamburger button in the top left then press the gear icon to open the settings. In the Settings panel, press safeguard and you will see three categories:
- contacts
- Event calendar
- Photos and videos
Choose the ones you want to include in your backup, and for Photos and Videos, you have two options: High quality or Original.
Unless you are a professional photographer, I recommend high quality, so you do not have to worry about running out of space. With that, you get unlimited free storage and only photos over 16 megapixels and videos over 1080p are resized.
With your backup options set, scroll down and press Start backup. Be patient; Depending on the size of your photo and video library, the backup process may take several hours.
What about my tunes, man?
Having a huge and finely organized music collection in iTunes, you? You can download up to 50,000 of your songs on Google Play. Take your laptop or go to your PC, go to this Google Play page to install the Music Manager app and follow the instructions to transfer your music to the cloud where it will be ready for your new Android phone.
