What is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080?

The Nvidia RTX 2080 is the child of the new Nvidia family of 20 series graphics cards (also called Turing). It is between the RTX 2080 Ti and the RTX 2070, more affordable.

It is also the successor of the GTX 1080, with improved internal performance and improved performance compared to its equivalent in generation Pascal, which allows a much more stable shooting rate when running games in Ultra HD. However, improving frame rates is not the only incentive for upgrading this time around.

Like all Turing series graphics cards, the Nvidia RTX 2080 supports fancy pant features that will revolutionize video game graphics. These include real-time ray tracing and deep learning super-sampling (DLSS).

Real-time ray tracing will allow video game developers to simulate more realistic lighting effects, both in terms of appearance and behavior. This will help make gaming environments more compelling than ever.

Deep Learning Super Sampling, meanwhile, uses artificial intelligence for more efficient video rendering, thus allowing for optimal performance.

The only problem with the RTX 2080? The cheaper GTX 1080 Ti is still competitive in standard performance performance. So that comes down to an almighty decision: Are ray tracing and DLSS good enough to deserve a RTX 2080 investment?

Nvidia RTX 2080 – Specifications and Technology

Like the other two Turing graphics cards, the Nvidia RTX 2080 hosts new hardware never before seen in a GeForce GPU. These include the Turing SM, Tensor Core and RT Core systems, all of which have been implemented to enable ray tracing and DLSS.

However, keep in mind that each of Nvidia's Turing GPUs offers different levels of performance for these new features. Nvidia measures this difference via "Giga Rays". The RTX 2080 Ti produces 10 Giga Rays per second, while the RTX 2080 is capable of eight in the same amount of time.

So, what does the difference of two seconds mean in terms of visual quality? Honestly, I do not know yet; little Nvidia on the outside. This is because we have not yet seen ray tracing in real time: the update to activate it will be available later this month. I will, however, be sure to update this review once I have tested it.

The graphics cards in the 20 series have also seen improvements in the architecture. The increase in the number of CUDA cores seems to be the most important because it is the most important feature to increase the number of frame frequencies as much as possible.

The RTX 2080 shows a 15% increase in the number of CUDA cores compared to the GTX 1080. Our benchmark results show that this translates into a significant improvement in overall performance.

On a bitter note, the RTX 2080 is lagging behind the GTX 1080 Ti latest generation for CUDA cores. In fact, there is a difference of 17.86% between the two. Of course, the GTX 1080 Ti is equipped with the old Pascal architecture, this difference in CUDA cores does not necessarily guarantee a performance superior to the GTX 1080 Ti.

The RTX 2080 also offers 8 GB of 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory, while optimized clock speeds can reach an impressive 1800 MHz when they are overclocked – although we have found Overclocked clock even exceed this figure.

Given all hardware upgrades, it is not surprising that the RTX 2080 has an increased power consumption of 45 watts compared to the GTX 1080, which reaches 225W. With this in mind, I would advise you to check that your PSU is up to the test before upgrading.

The SLI format is also supported here, while the RTX 2080 has the same ports as the rest of the Turing range: HDMI, USB-C, and DisplayPort. The latter, in particular, will be useful for enabling connectivity to HTC Vive Pro.

Judging by the datasheet, it does not seem like much separates the RTX 2080 from the GTX 1080 Ti. But there is one essential difference that makes the RTX 2080 a much more attractive purchase: ray tracing.

Rather than simply increasing the frequency of images, ray tracing introduces a whole new way of simulating light effects. With this new technology, light will reflect and bounce off surfaces as in real life. This results in more realistic shadows and gives shiny surfaces a brighter appearance.

Nvidia presented a host of demonstrations to show the potential of ray tracing. From the Stormtrooper reflective armor to the Metro Exodus flame-lit tunnels, the ray tracing examples are certainly impressive.

However, I could not determine if real-time ray tracing was as good as these tech demos suggest. This is because we are still waiting for the Microsoft DirectX Raytracing software update, which will enable this feature.

Rumors suggest we could see this update as early as November 20th, which will coincide with the launch of Battlefield V. That makes sense, since EA's multiplayer shooter is one of the most remarkable games to have already confirmed the support of ray tracing.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Metro Exodus are some of the other games that will use the revolutionary tracing technology. The complete list of supported titles is available below.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Super-sampling in deep learning

The second feature that makes the Turing lineup is Deep Learning Super-Sampling, or DLSS. Its impact on video game graphics is more discreet than ray tracing, but could potentially be just as important.

DLSS uses artificial intelligence to help with video rendering. This does not necessarily improve image quality over more traditional rendering methods, but allows the GPU to focus elsewhere, resulting in more efficient overall performance.

Unfortunately, DLSS has not yet been activated on the new Turing cards. The potential release date is not known, but I will update this review with my impressions as soon as I can test it.

On a more positive note, DLSS is apparently much easier to implement than ray tracing. This means that we will probably see a long list of games announcing their support over the next few months. For the moment, however, a complete list of 25 games contains DLSS.

Once more games are confirmed to support DLSS, I'll be sure to update this list.

Test methodology

I evaluated the Nvidia RTX 2080 using the Trusted Review test bench, which was designed to match the specifications of a consumer gaming PC. The exact components of the construction can be seen below:

This is the same test bench we use for all our component tests, ensuring that all our reviews are accurate and comparable.

Note that the Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti was initially evaluated using an Intel Core i7-8700K processor, but will update the review soon to reflect the new benchmark results using the processor upgraded i9-9900K.

Graphics cards for comparison

During the RTX 2080 test process, I compared three other graphics cards for comparison purposes. These GPUs were RTX 2080 Ti, GTX 1080 Ti and GTX 1080.

I included the last two graphics cards because it is likely that anyone upgrading to RTX 2080 will already have one of these two GPUs. At the same time, I included the RTX 2080 Ti scores in my tests to show the considerable improvement in performance between the two Turing cards.

All of these graphics cards are official Founders editions built by Nvidia and should therefore serve as a basis for third-party alternatives.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of my benchmark benchmarking games because it is one of the most technically demanding and visually impressive titles. It is also one of the few games to offer both ray tracing and DLSS.

The results of Shadow of the Tomb Raider show that the performance of the RTX 2080 has been significantly improved compared to its counterpart Pascal, the GTX 1080. In fact, the scroll speed has been significantly increased by 38% with a setting of 3840x 2160 (4K). ) resolution.

The difference only worsens when you use Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1920 x 1080 (Full HD). The RTX 2080 shows a dramatic improvement of 86% for frame rates at 91 fps. It is clear that the RTX 2080 offers a significant advantage over its latest-generation counterpart.

The results were not as impressive as those of the GTX 1080 Ti. Despite the latest generation sports architecture, the GTX 1080 Ti was only 3 fps less than the RTX 2080 for the 4K test. There have been much more respectable performance gains at lower resolutions, but if you can afford to spend money on a RTX 2080, you will most likely have something to play in Ultra HD.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands

It was a similar story with Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The RTX 2080 has a decent improvement in frame rate compared to the GTX 1080, with a 24% increase in the 4K benchmark test and a 20% increase in HD.

However, the 36.90 frames per second at 4K are still far from the 60 frames per second desired by most players. The performance of the RTX 2080 is also much lower than that of the RTX 2080 Ti. Of course, you get what you pay for: the RTX 2080 Ti costs £ 350 more than the RTX 2080.

Again, the RTX 2080 does not offer a much higher frame rate than the GTX 1080 Ti. Ray tracing and DLSS are the only features that really separate the two graphics cards here, and since Ghost Recon: Wildlands does not support either, you will not see any real benefit in upgrading a GTX 1080 Ti for that. title.

Instead of comparing only super-intensive video games, I've also tested the RTX 2080's performance with titles released a few years ago. As might be expected, the graphics processor had high frame rates, but something very interesting happened with the GTX 1080 Ti.

The GTX 1080 Ti outperformed the RTX 2080 in all three benchmarks. Admittedly, the difference was marginal, but it is still enough to encourage people to opt for the RTX 2080 before the GTX 1080.

That said, all the Dirt Rally benchmark results obtained with the four graphics cards were so high that to the naked eye, you would have trouble seeing the differences.

In addition to using video games to test the RTX 2080, I also directed the 3DMark reference program, Fire Strike Ultra. Instead of giving you an average frame rate figure, it turns a unique score, useful for comparing the overall performance of the GPU.

It is interesting to note that the GTX 1080 Ti has improved the RTX 2080 result, once again establishing that the only advantage of the RTX 2080 is really the ray tracing and the DLSS.

Nvidia RTX 2080 – Performance conclusions

The four benchmark tests prove that you will get a tedious upgrade if you upgrade from a GTX 1080 to a RTX 2080. If you want to increase these frame rates for 4K games, the RTX 2080 seems to be an interesting upgrade.

However, a major problem arises: the GTX 1080 Ti is available at a lower price and offers almost identical performance to the RTX 2080 for 4K content, despite an older architecture.

The RTX 2080 is almost identical to the RTX 2080 Ti, apart from the scrawled name on the back.

Since the three GPUs of the 20 series are overloaded if you just want to play games in HD, the only reason to buy a RTX 2080 compared to the GTX 1080 Ti is to access the new features ray tracing and DLSS.

If you're not a player and you just want a GPU for animation and design work, there's no point buying the RTX 2080. However, for gamers, any depends on whether ray tracing and DLSS have sufficient impact to: deserve extra money. I think they will, but we have to wait until I can test both features to be sure. I will update this review as soon as I will be able to properly test ray tracing and DLSS.

Nvidia RTX 2080 – Overclocking, heat and energy consumption

If you are upgrading from a GTX 1080, you must ensure that your PSU is up to date. With peak power of 326.4 watts, the RTX 2080 saw a dramatic increase in wattage of 69.9 watts compared to the GTX 1080.

This figure brings it to about the same power required as the GTX 1080 Ti, with peak power of 341.3. So, if you are upgrading from a GTX 1080 Ti, your current configuration should be able to support the RTX 2080 without any problem.

If you want to increase these rates, you can overclock the RTX 2080 to an impressive margin.

Of course, if you want to overclock the RTX 2080, you will need a quality cooler to prevent your platform from warming up. Thanks to the configuration of Trusted Reviews, I was able to significantly improve performance: a 150 MHz overclock, to be exact.

I used the Unigine Heaven software throughout the overclocking process and I managed to see an improvement of 9 ips from the benchmark results. If I tried to increase the clock speed, Unigine would stop quickly. There is nothing to be ashamed of, however, since these overclocking results are still very impressive.

Like the RTX 2080 Ti, temperatures have never exceeded 75 ° Cdespite software failures, I never had to worry about turning on the RTX 2080. The dual fan configuration also worked very well. Despite the pressure on the RTX 2080, it never became very strong. It was impressive because no one wants a gaming platform that kills like a jet plane.

Why buy the Nvidia RTX 2080?

The best way to think about the RTX 2080 is to consider the (almost) identical twin of the GTX 1080 Ti, but with the added bonus of ray tracing and DLSS.

The problem is that I have not yet been able to test ray tracing and DLSS. It is therefore difficult to recommend this graphics card for the moment. I'm pretty optimistic that these upcoming features especially ray tracing will be great game changers for video game visuals. Nevertheless, I still suggest waiting until I have the chance to test them myself.

If ray tracing and DLSS are as incredible as Nvidia claims, the RTX might be the most advantageous option in the Turing range, offering time-tested features and frame rates 4K uniforms at a significantly cheaper price than the powerful RTX 2080 Ti.

Verdict

The RTX 2080 can offer almost identical 4K performance to the less expensive GTX 1080 Ti, but the addition of ray tracing and DLSS technology could be enough to make this card one of the most valuable graphics cards on the market.
