The Oculus Go is a beautiful virtual headset in which it is easy to play with an excellent motion controller to play. But sometimes you can not beat the response and control offered by a proper gamepad.
Oculus Go allows you to connect a more traditional controller via Bluetooth. But, do not worry, you do not need to buy a new expensive kit to access games based on the controller; you may already have one in your living room.
That's right, the PS4, Switch and (some) Xbox One controllers can all be connected to your Go. But how do you do that exactly and what can you do with them? Check out our handy guide below for everything you need to know.
Download the Oculus app and connect your Go
The first thing to do is to install your Go on a smartphone, which you probably have already done. Download the free Oculus app at iOS or Android app stores, open it and look for the settings at the bottom right. From there, you can pair your Go to your phone by selecting "Pair New Headset". Oculus has prepared its own detailed, step-by-step guide to guide you through the process.
Prepare to pair
Now for the important bit. Back in the settings, select your Go headset (it should be on) to open a drop-down menu. Here you will find a "Controller" option. Tap to access another menu listing all devices already connected, including your motion controller. It's "Pair New Controller" that we want; Pressing this key will get an empty screen waiting for a connection with your chosen device. What you will do next depends on the controller you want to pair.
PS4 DualShock 4
For the Sony PS4 controller, you must have it on hand and not be connected to another PS4 system. Simultaneously press the PlayStation button (the circular button with the logo in the center) and the Share button (located just to the left of the touchpad) at the same time. The controller LED starts blinking white, indicating that it is searching for connections. Come back with your smartphone and you should see the "Controller Wireless Controller" list. Tap it and you're connected.
Switch Pro Controller
The Pro Controller for Nintendo's Hybrid Console is extremely simple to connect. At the top of the device, next to the charging port, is a small circular button. Make sure your Pro is not currently synced with a switch, and then hold down this button. Flashing lights will appear and you will see the controller appear on your phone. Select it to pair your Switch controller with your Oculus Go.
Xbox One S Controller
Unfortunately, you can not use the first generation of Microsoft Xbox One controllers with your Go. Even the one that came with the Oculus Rift will not work. If, on the other hand, you bought one of the Xbox One S controllers when it was launched last year, or if you have one with the Xbox One X, you should be ready to go. A round sync button is located at the top of the device, next to the charging port. All you have to do is keep this and the controller should eventually appear on your phone. Tap the name and enter the game.
Tips for using a gamepad with Oculus Go
In truth, pairing your joystick with your Go is only half the battle; they are difficult to use too. I would definitely recommend sticking with Go's motion controller when using the usual menu; the headset becomes easily confused and often, it will not show you the right menus. Select the application you want with the controller and then make the change.
The other big problem is latency. There are many. Some button presses may not be recorded. It is therefore important to press and hold them until you achieve the desired effect. This obviously makes some games difficult to play, so you can choose slower experiments.
What games can I play with the gamepad?
There are not many Oculus Go games that are compatible with game consoles, but there are still some good ones. Perhaps the most obvious choice is the stealth game, Republic, which is quite easy to play once you have adapted to latency. It's a bit more complicated to control Oculus's free Herobound games, but it's worth it if you're ready for the fight. Personally? I have to talk about Land's End, a brilliant exploration game whose slowness will not be a problem.
