Despite consumer demand, it is not easy for smartphone manufacturers to make their devices available on media, American or not. There are many commercial and logistical considerations and, more often than not, small businesses have more difficulty attracting the attention of carriers. OnePlus, however, is no longer a small company that can be ignored and it plans to take up the challenge of making its future smartphones, especially those of the 5G, available on carrier shelves.
Unlike, say, at Xiaomi, OnePlus supplies the US market but only through direct sales. But even though its prices are nearly half of those of major flagship smartphones, some consumers still prefer to have insurance carriers subsidies. Another factor that OnePlus considers is the way carriers allow buyers to try the phone first. Currently, the only way to do this is to organize one-time events.
OnePlus has already started partnering with European carriers and wants to do it in the US, says PCMag. And he could use 5G as a lever. Citing its friendly ties with Qualcomm, OnePlus plans to make one of the first 5G compatible phones as early as next year. The timing is not accidental. US carriers plan to deploy 5G in 2019.
Things are certainly going in this direction. Despite the misadventure of the annual launch, OnePlus phones remain popular and sell quickly, almost like a mini effect Xiaomi and Apple. Each model has had its fair share of criticism but the company's executives seem to have mastered the art of streamlining perceived flaws.
That said, more than technical and commercial considerations, the entry of OnePlus into the US market via carriers could still be suspended due to the upsurge in trade between the United States and China. Nor does it increase the growing mistrust of Chinese smart phone and networking equipment manufacturers, such as Huawei and ZTE, whether or not such suspicion is justified
