OnePlus TV is the next big thing in business, coming next year

The success of OnePlus was nothing short of a miracle. In an over-saturated smartphone market dominated by Samsung and Apple, an unnamed startup has dared to challenge the status quo with a high-end smartphone at half price. The company has evolved a lot since then, but apart from a short run of drones and wireless headphones, it has not grown thanks to its mobile roots. The founder, Pete Lau, however, thinks that the time has come to bring his magic to another saturated market, and some might even say dying: televisions.

Smart TVs are not lacking. In fact, almost all new high-end TVs have a "smart" feature or another, from internet broadcasting to integration with smart wizards. Lau, however, thinks that TVs, even the smart ones, are still too traditional and that there is a missed opportunity to really rethink television.

Sending to Business Insider, Mr. Lau lists some of the benefits that he believes the OnePlus TV will be able to offer. This ranges from posting photos and videos from smartphones to calendar events and tee times, and more. In other words, it would offer seamless integration with smartphones and visual feedback for smart assistants.

Sound familiar? That's because we already have things like Amazon's Echo platform, including Echo Show. There is also Google Home, Google Assistant, and Google Chromecast. There are even smart TVs with Google Assistant integrated via Android TV. For Lau, however, these are not enough and want to make the OnePlus TV the focus of the home rather than an extension of a smart speaker. The executive was also shy about which intelligent assistant will live in this smart TV.

The big question is whether it will be able to achieve the same turn as the smartphone market. After all, OnePlus was not exactly known for its innovations. It is rather known to take these existing innovations and pack them into an affordable product. That said, if you can actually do it without reducing the screen resolution as it did with the OnePlus phones, it could very well double the thunderbolt.
