The year 2018 is officially the year of the full – frame frameless. On September 25, Panasonic, maker of Micro Four Thirds cameras, announced the switch to a larger sensor size, by launching a pair of full-length mirrorless cameras at Photokina in Germany. Called Lumix S1 and S1R, Panasonic cameras have a unique advantage over the recently introduced Canon and Nikon models: they will be launched with an already existing ecosystem of lenses. In addition, they both have a 4K video at 60 frames per second, a dual image stabilization and two media card slots with an XQD slot and an SD slot.

Panasonic has chosen to use the Leica L-Mount, which means that eight Leica lenses are already available. Leica and Panasonic have worked closely together in the past and formed a new alliance that also includes Sigma, which will also produce lenses for L-Mount. Panasonic will manufacture 10 lenses from here 12 months, and three others this year: a 50mm f / 1.4, 24-105mm and 70-200mm zoom, according to the company, both high resolution and awesome bokeh .
The S1R and S1 will both have full frame sensors, but the S1R will have a higher 47 megapixel resolution while the S1 will offer 24 megapixels. Both cameras will also use the Venus Engine. Like Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds G series, cameras can capture 4K / 60 video. (And while Panasonic is not launching an 8K camera this year at Photokina, the company promises 8K in 2020).
The camera body and lenses can work together to create a Dual IS system, which uses both camera body stabilization and lens stabilization for additional vibration reduction. Panasonic says the series is the first to use Dual IS on a full-frame sensor.
The cameras will use high-speed, high-precision hybrid contrast detection autofocus. Panasonic claims that the S-series also uses artificial intelligence deep in the autofocus system, but did not deepen the operation of this technology and its impact on camera performance.
The new S Series will also house the highest resolution electronic viewfinder available on the market in a waterproof housing with a robust flap. The camera case has a secondary LCD screen at the top, while the main LCD screen at the back uses a three-axis tilt for viewing from different angles. Yosuke Yamane, director of Panasonic's imaging division, explains that the layout of the controls is designed to give the camera the impression of "being part of the photographer's body." The company has also successfully installed an XQD and SD slot, providing not only two different formats, but also a way to save images in the field.
Although the advancement of full-frame mirrorless technology this year is enough to prompt some photographers to question the future of Micro Four Thirds, Yamane says the Lumix G series is going nowhere. The S Series is designed for professionals offering the best image quality, while the G Series is the most responsive and most portable camera line in the company.
The Panasonic Lumix S1R and S1 will be launched early 2019. Official prices and full specifications have not yet been announced.
