Sony Interactive Entertainment America filed an updated patent in October for what appears to be a new controller with an integrated touch screen. The patent has been filed with the US Patent Office and actually contains a lot of information about the technology that Sony wants to acquire.
The patent filing for this "game controller" is very technical, but as u / AlphaFoxWarfare has discovered – it identifies a kind of touchscreen addition.
"A controller for a wireless interface with a computing device is provided, comprising: a housing defined by a main body, a first extension extending from a first end of the main body and a second extension; extending from a second end of the main housing. body, the first extension and the second extension being respectively held by a first and a second hand of a user; a touch screen defined along the upper surface of the main body between the first extension and the second extension; a first set of buttons disposed on the upper surface of the main body near the first extension and on a first side of the touch screen; and a second set of buttons disposed on the upper surface of the main body near the second extension and on a second side of the touch screen. "
If you do not understand any of this, it basically encapsulates some of the most basic features of the controller and highlights that specific touchscreen component. This gives us a rare glimpse of the thoughts of the R & D department of Sony and PlayStation.
The patent describes the controller as a DualShock 4, so that it could well be a version of this controller with a "touch screen". Although it is possible that this patent is an updated version of the existing PlayStation controller, the added functionality must certainly be taken into account.
Whether or not we end up seeing this implemented in a new version of DualShock 4, or maybe – maybe just – as a clue to the controller of the PlayStation 5, the time will be running out. We recommend you take it with a grain of salt, because of a previous patent from Sony, which has turned out to be a simple, unsubstantiated update of the existing PlayStation DualShock controller.
DualShockers will let you know if anything changes about this story or if Sony makes an official announcement regarding this gamepad.
