PlayStation: Sony will not participate in the E3 2019

In a somewhat surprising move, Sony announced that it would ignore the E3 2019.

"As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to search for inventive opportunities to engage the community," Sony said in a statement to Game Informer. "PlayStation fans represent the world in our eyes and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight the players, so we decided not to participate in E3 in 2019."

Sony also said that they were exploring "new and familiar ways to involve our community in 2019 and that they were eager to share our plans".

The idea that Sony is not at the E3 is certainly strange. Not only the first E3 that they will never participate in, but Sony is responsible for some of the biggest highlights of the series' history. Indeed, their recent press conferences have generally been considered the gold standard for E3 presentations. Of course, not everyone was on board with their elaborate (but tedious) step-by-step installation at E3 2018.

Interestingly, this presentation may have been the determining factor in Sony's decision to skip the E3 2019. It was clear that Sony thought beyond the bounds of the E3 event and perhaps even beyond his own shows this year's PlayStation Experience event). Of course, this raises some questions about how Sony will replace these events. The obvious answer is that they will organize a single event that can even run against (or around the same time) E3. We would be shocked if Sony completely ignores the events.

However, we would not be surprised if Sony chooses the path of Nintendo and starts hosting online Direct style ads. Not only are these ads cheaper and we can even say that they go further, but they also have the advantage of being extremely controlled. In other words, they are free of live presentation errors. It is also possible that this decision has something to do with the desire to have the most control over the revelations of the PS5.

It should also be noted that Microsoft seized this opportunity to announce that it would still host an E3 2019 conference. Suffice to say that they will attract a lot of attention at the show next year.
