Update: It’s live!
Pokémon GO is a game about walking around collecting candy, and so it’s not exactly shocking that it pulls out all the stops for Halloween this year and every year. Last year’s event saw the debut of Gen 3, and the year before that was the first event Pokémon GO ever held. Developer Niantic Labs just pulled the curtain off of this year’s event, which starts today at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time, and there’s a lot to work with. Read on for all the bonuses and new stuff we’ll be getting with Pokémon GO’s third Halloween event.
To start with, we’ve got double candy for all Pokémon catches, but no word on egg hatches or buddy distance. That’s good news for those rounding out Gen 4, at least, because the combination of double candy with a Pinap berry can net you a whopping 12 candy per catch. And that should make the next bonus a little more enticing: we’re also getting a collection of Gen 4 Ghost and Dark-type Pokémon, including but not limited to Drifloon and Stunky.
Halloween will also come with the game’s first Ghost-type Legendary Pokémon in the form of Giratina, a Ghost and Dragon-type that I totally predicted would be arriving a few weeks ago. That means Mewtwo will be out of town tomorrow afternoon, so catch it while you’ve still got the chance.
The real mystery here comes from our old friend Professor Oak, who will apparently be having new special research for us to complete, which could be all sorts of things. The only two special research tasks we’ve had so far were tied to mythical Pokémon, and so my best bet is Dakrai, a Gen 4 Dark-type mythical Pokémon that would fit the Halloween theme. That would mean we’ll be skipping Gen 3’s Jirachi, but I’m sort of assuming that will come along with next year’s Tanabata. It also might not be mythical, but we’ll see.
On top of that, we’re also getting new avatar items like a Driftloon hat and a Gengar backpack. Love Gengar? Show Gengar some love. All in all this is feeling like a pretty big event, and certainly more than 2017, where we saw new Pokémon but not a tremendous lot else. Check in tomorrow for more.
