The formidable 911 Speedster concept introduced by Porsche in June received the green light for production. This two-seater sports model was built as part of the company's 70th anniversary celebration. It will also celebrate the end of production of the current generation 911. Good luck trying to get one, though.
Porsche made several changes to the original concept. It is now painted in red guard, a shade chosen to echo the original 911 Speedster introduced in 1988, and rolls on 21-inch cross-spoke alloy wheels inspired by the design of race cars like the 911 RSR. The retro style mirrors and the fuel tank cap are finished in dark chrome to add a touch of contrast to the overall look. What you see is what you will get at the beginning of the production, according to the company, although other color combinations are available.
True to tradition, the Speedster does not come with a folding cloth top like the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet on which it rests. Do not look for a hardtop of any type. All you get to protect the sumptuous interior of the elements, it's a rollover that snaps on the body with pimples. You can not drive it with the cover in place, so you should choose to stay dry or keep moving forward. We are tempted to suggest this last point, but a glance inside the Speedster might convince you otherwise.
The limited edition model will inaugurate a new option called Porsche Heritage Design. It's an interior look package that gives a modern touch to the stylistic brands of the iconic models of the past. Full details of available options will appear in the weeks prior to the Speedster's date of sale.
Not having a peak also means that you and yours will enjoy the sound track of the Speedster's naturally aspirated 500 horsepower six-cylinder engine, a unit borrowed from the GT3. The six goes through a six-speed manual transmission.
Porsche will begin production of the 911 Speedster during the first half of 2019. Only 1,948 units will be manufactured, a number chosen because Porsche was founded in 1948. Prices have not been published yet, but do not expect they are cheap. This classic future will have a considerable premium over a conventional 911 convertible, but fans will earn all the production time in an instant.
