A mail bug would be harming the PS4.

Some readers of the Sony PlayStation 4 reported that they were receiving messages that were causing them problems, forcing them to reset the factory settings.

The players set up several discussions on the PS4 sub-account over the weekend, highlighting the problem, which was linked to a specific string of characters – like the text that crash people's iPhones.

Some said the messages caused their consoles to hang when they opened, while others said the message notification on the screen was sufficient to cause the problem.

Sony acknowledged the problem in an email sent to the VG24 / 7 video game news blog, and indicated that the problem was resolved.

"We are aware of the situation and are planning a system software update to fix this problem," Sony told the site in an email.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment. There was also no solution proposed on his @AskPlayStation Twitter help account.

One person stated that his team received the malicious message while playing Rainbow Six: Siege.

"A player from the other team used a fictitious account to send the message and crushed my whole team," he wrote in an article published by Reddit on Saturday. "We all had to reset the factory."

People who have been affected by the glitch say that the message stays on the console and resets it each time they try to turn it on. So they used a factory reset to erase it. However, this also removes all games and saves on the console.

A less radical solution is to use the PS Messages application, available on iOS and Android, or on the My PlayStation website to access the message and delete it. They can also try to start the console in safe mode and rebuild the database.

As a precaution, PS4 players can set their messages as confidential by accessing the Console Account Management menu, and then Privacy and Personal Information Settings, where they can change their message settings to Friends Only or Person.
