Raspberry Pi 3 Model A + is a compact and powerful Raspberry Pi – TechCrunch

Raspberry Pi Foundation has just announced a brand new model. The Raspberry Pi 3 model A + is basically a flagship product, the Raspberry Pi, on a smaller circuit board, with some compromises. It costs $ 25, or $ 10 less than the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B +.

The composition becomes a bit confusing but support me for a second. If you want the best Raspberry Pi, you should get the 3 B + model. It comes with a 1.4GHz ARMv8 quad-core processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet (max. 300 Mbps), USB 2.0 and HDMI.

The new model Pi 3 model A + is supposed to be a smaller model, but with most of the advantages of the B + model. Its specifications are similar except that you get 512 MB of RAM instead of 1 GB, a single USB 2.0 port and the Ethernet port disappeared.

But that's about all. If you do not need a lot of RAM or Ethernet, it's a surprisingly decent mini-computer. Even if you've already played with a Raspberry Pi, recent models have come a long way. The processor is now powerful enough to perform demanding tasks.

Of course, it will take longer to convert a video, decompress a large file or launch an emulated game on a Raspberry Pi rather than on a laptop. But if you want a fanless computer that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it's hard to find something cheaper. Docker works pretty well on it, which makes it even easier to maintain if you are in containers.

If you want to place a Raspberry Pi in a constrained location, the Raspberry Pi Zero models have a slim design and do not require a ton of power. These models are however much slower. The foundation still sells older models for those who need to replace older Raspberry Pis models with the same models – but I would not recommend buying them.
