If you want to maximize your Internet speed at home, it's a good idea to use an Ethernet cable instead of relying on a wireless connection. But what many people do not consider, is if the material they use to access the internet could be improved. Razer thinks it's possible and launches the Sila router to prove it.
The Razer Sila is for players and streamers who want a latency-free experience as much as possible. This is surely the goal of all routers, right? Razer says that it improves the possibilities of a conventional router by including a number of additional technological elements. In particular, Razer FasTrack, multichannel DFS Zero-Wait and mesh networking.
So how does each of these technologies contribute to speed? Razer FasTrack is essentially a traffic management software. It allows Sila to detect which applications and devices the traffic comes from and use that information to prioritize the different information packets. FasTrack knows if the data comes from a smartphone, a connected TV, your computer, a PlayStation 4 console, Xbox One or Switch. You may remember that Linksys started prioritizing Xbox traffic on the WRT32XB earlier this year, which works the same way.
The best wireless routers
If you need to rely on WiFi, it's here that DFS Zero-Wait multichannel can help you. Razer describes it as providing "clean WiFi channels" to avoid the slowdown caused by existing network traffic. Combined with FasTrack, it should allow Sila to provide a wireless connection specific to the multiplayer game you play on PS4., for example, or this live Twitch stream streamed from your PC.
The Mesh Network feature allows multiple Sila routers to be used together for better coverage. According to Mr. Razer, two Sila routers can provide wireless coverage of up to 6,000 square feet, or three routers will serve multi-storey locations and reach greater than 6,000 square feet. This coverage is backed up by a 5 GHz tri-band terrestrial link and four DFS channels to minimize network interference.
In practice, this means a router capable of reaching wireless speeds of up to 1734 Mbps thanks to nine high gain internal antennas. As for connectivity, the Sila includes four Gigabit Ethernet ports (1x WAN and 3x LAN), a USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port. Android and iOS apps also allow you to change settings, enable advanced features, and control security, including guest network access.
