Editor's note: On October 21st, Razer released a firmware update for the Razer Phone 2 (OTA). We decided not to publish our final evaluations until we could thoroughly test them with the new update. Once our tests are complete, we will update the journal with complete notes.
Original from last year Razer phone has entered the telephony market as a cowboy by the swinging doors of a living room. It has attracted attention for its rectangular design, its 120Hz display and its power. But it lacked the polish and features of other flagship phones and was considered more like a quirk of "gaming phone".
The new Razer Phone 2 corrects these problems without losing the soul of the original. In fact, the new phone has the same "monolith of 2001: a space odyssey" while adding IP67 water resistance, a wireless charge, a portrait mode of the camera and a screen 120Hz even brighter.
However, not everything is rosy with the new Razer phone. The "flagship features" have a cost, literally. The Razer Phone 2 phone costs $ 800 and $ 780, a conversion of $ 1,225 Australian. That gives you 64GB of storage space, but it's $ 100 more than last year's Razer and puts the phone in the same price range as the Google Pixel 3 and iPhone XR. However, the phone is compatible with 2 TB microSD cards if you want to increase storage capacity.
Cameras have improved hardware, but the picture quality is satisfactory. Photos and videos currently suffer from moiré and stripes of color.
Despite a 4,000 mAh battery, the Razer Phone 2 performed poorly in the CNET battery test when streaming video in airplane mode. However, in the real world, it has lasted all day, including some 120Hz gaming sessions.
If you live on movies and video games on mobile, the Razer Phone 2 is worth the detour. However, if you want a great camera and a phone that can last more than a day with a charge, take a look at the cheapest solution. OnePlus 6 or the Galaxy Note 9.
The clean design of Razer Phone 2 gets Gorilla Glass 5 and an extra cool
The block design of the Razer Phone 2 will not please everyone, but I find it unique and attractive. The square edges are reminiscent of the iPhone 5 and hold well in my hand, especially in the landscape orientation. However, I have big hands and in a smaller pair of mittens, this phone could be more than a handful. I like being able to place the Razer Phone 2 on its side with confidence to watch a movie or capture a video.
And in case you wonder, there is no notch. Instead, you'll find a thick forehead and chin containing two of the most powerful speakers I've ever heard on the phone. Seriously, play Bohemian Rhapsody or Liquid Swords in GZA of Wu-Tang Clan, press this Dolby button, select Music – and you're welcome. These speakers are all the more impressive as they have been completely redesigned to make the IP67 phone water-resistant.
The back of the phone contains a cool chroma logo that is not only there for appearances: it shines when you receive notifications. So when new texts or Snapchat the messages enter, the logo lights up. You can also customize the color, the brightness of the glow and determine whether it is static or not. There is an inactive mode in which the logo lights up and darkens as if the phone was breathing and it even drew several colleagues to my desk with its siren visual cue.
The back of the Gorilla Glass 5 allows wireless charging, which is even more fun if you buy the Razer Phone 2 wireless charger at $ 99. Place your phone on the stand and the edges of the base light up as follows: Rainbow Road by Mario Kart.
