Looks like PlayStation can not go wrong. This part of the business generated a profit of nearly 803 million dollars (90.6 billion yen) and a business turnover of nearly 5 billion dollars (550.1 billion yen) . Earlier this year, John Kodera, head of games at Sony, predicted that the PS4 would reach saturation point. It was therefore natural that console sales start to decline. For another quarter, this prophecy has not yet been realized. In fact, 3.9 million PS4 were sold during the three-month period, which is more than in the previous two quarters. In addition to all these consoles, 75.1 million games were purchased – original title Marvel's Spider-Man representing 3.3 million euros – the majority being digital downloads rather than physical copies.
This is the best quarter for the history of gaming sales in recent history, with the exception of the holiday period of last year. PlayStation Plus subscriptions also hit record. Sony finished the month of September with 34.3 million subscribers, compared with 33.9 million the previous quarter and 34.2 million six months earlier. With such numbers, Sony has also increased its expected revenue during the holiday season. Naturally, the company hopes to sell even more PS Plus consoles, games and subscriptions, not to mention that sales of prestigious titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey will not report their impact until the next quarter's results. Before the end of 2018, Battlefield V will also have launched, as well as the PlayStation Classic retro mini console that must appear on millions of Christmas wish lists.
Outside the PlayStation, Sony Pictures had a very profitable quarter. In fact, revenues were slightly lower than in the same period last year, but profits more than tripled to about $ 208 million (JPY 23.5 billion). A decent bit of that can be credited to Hotel Transylvania 3: summer holidays, which took $ 516 million at the global box office, if it's still several hundred millions of that Spider-Man reunion reached at the same time last year. TV license in cash for Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle and Peter Rabbit also contributed to a good quarter for Sony Pictures. The last three months of 2018 should continue to make progress, given the recent Venom has already exceeded $ 500 million at the box office.
There is nothing too crazy happening elsewhere at Sony. The company's smartphone camera sensors are still sought-after components, but this quarter's business figure is the highest in its history. Sony's semiconductor business posted a profit of approximately $ 425 million (JPY 47.9 billion) over the three-month period, which is significantly better than last quarter, but a little less than the figure recorded for last year.
The revenues and profits of Sony's music business were virtually unchanged from the previous year. As you might expect, the company continues to make more money from streaming, offsetting lower sales of physical media and digital downloads. Sony hopes however that by the end of the fiscal year, this sector of activity will be abnormally profitable due to the acquisition of EMI Music Publishing. This is partly due to financial deception, as the purchase price of the EMI stake, which she does not already have, will automatically increase the value of the 40% that he holds. already.
Sony's imaging business is doing well, with sales up but stable from one quarter to the next. Profits have dropped from the beginning of the year, but Sony says sales are being maintained thanks to its competitive range of fixed and video cameras. Home entertainment products have been reversed. Revenues are almost identical in the last two quarters, but Sony is garnering much more profit. More profits, even at the same time last year, despite higher sales in these three months.
Most of us think that Sony is a technology company, but its financial services company – which includes a life insurance provider – is responsible for big numbers. This quarter, the turnover exceeded $ 3 billion (353.5 billion yen), which is not the case this far behind the equivalent figure for PlayStation. This is however not extremely profitable, with revenues of about 347 million dollars (39.2 billion JPY). Still, it's much better than Sony's mobile arm, which continues to be a money pit.
Mobile phone revenues have fallen steadily, and this quarter has been particularly bad. Although sales of approximately $ 1 billion (JPY 117.8 billion) were recorded, the mobile branch recorded a loss of approximately $ 265 million (JPY 29.8 billion). It's not as hard as the one felt at the end of the last exercise, but the outlook remains bleak. We have not yet determined whether the Xperia XZ3, which was launched at the end of this quarter, will have a positive impact. The fact that it is an XZ2 with a better screen and a brighter finish is probably not a good omen, however. It seems that Sony is happy to take the shot for the moment, in the hope that one day, he will be able to transform his mobile activity. Sony plays the game long, however, so we do not hold our breath.
