Samsung applies AI to medical imaging

Samsung Electronics has applied its artificial intelligence algorithms to its imaging devices, the company said.

The South Korean technology giant and medical device affiliate Samsung Medison have introduced various types of diagnostic imaging software at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the North American Radiology Society (RSNA 2018) to Chicago.

The offers include those for ultrasound, digital radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Samsung's S-Detect for Breast, which analyzes breast lesions with the help of ultrasound images and provides standardized reports and classifications, was presented to RSNA 2018.

According to Samsung, the software has increased the accuracy of the diagnosis from 0.83 to 0.87 for physicians with four years of experience or less, according to a study published by Professor of Radiology Tommaso Bartolotta of the University of Palermo in Italy .

Its artificial intelligence software for digital radiography, dubbed SimGrid, provides images of lung tissue obscured by the bones of chest X-rays.

Its artificial intelligence software called Automatic Detection of Pulmonary Nodules, as its name suggests, detects pulmonary nodules more accurately.

Samsung has also introduced a mobile computer tomography control unit and is developing an artificial intelligence technology that will allow MRIs to display information such as the thickness of knee cartilage and images of knee arthritis.

More and more businesses are also looking to apply AI to health care. Last week, LG CNS and Lunit announced their intention to apply the AI ​​and cloud for the analysis of X-ray videos of the lungs.

Samsung strengthens its artificial intelligence capabilities by launching health care research centers around the world. Its seventh center opened its research center last month in Montreal.

Samsung plans to invest 22 billion US dollars in AI, 5G and emerging technologies.
