Samsung's most exciting phone may well be the collapsible Galaxy phone that the company has been renting for years. Samsung has stopped pushing back the phone, explaining to reporters, questioned about the delays that the development is not quite over. But the pressure is mounting and the Korean giant is expected to unveil its phone in November before Huawei can claim that it was the first folding handset in the world.
At least that's what we thought last week when the reporters relayed DJ Koh's latest comments on it. The head of Samsung Mobile said that it was "time to deliver" on a foldable device, revealing that the foldable phone will not just become a tablet when it will be unfolded – here are his comments again:
You can use most uses … on foldable status. But when you need to browse or see something, you may need to unfold it. But even unfolded, what kind of advantage does this give compared to the tablet? If the deployed experience is the same as that of the tablet, why (consumers) would they buy it?
Thus, every device, every feature, every innovation must have a meaningful message for our end customer. So when the end customer uses it, (they think) "wow, that's why Samsung did it".
But a new story of The Korea Herald says that the journalists may have misunderstood Koh's remarks. Samsung has rejected rumors that the Galaxy F will be unveiled in November at the Samsung developer conference. Galaxy F is the latest name for the handset, which previously called Galaxy X in a multitude of rumors.
"We will have more to say on the developing phone at that time, probably some details on the specs," said a Samsung official.
In other words, Samsung will continue to tease the phone at the conference, with a launch that will follow at CES or MWC next year.
The herald does not say that the phone, code-named Winner, is in the final phase of development and will be released early next year. The prototype will be built around November and the handset will feature a foldable structure, packing 3.5-inch OLED screens.
The report notes that Koh has revealed that the phone will have a foldable display instead of a display hinge, as shown by some patent applications. However, a few paragraphs later, The herald also said that it is still not certain that Samsung will adopt a hinge. Well, any foldable phone will have a hinge mechanism. The hinge can be visible or placed under the screen. Foldable phones with visible hinges already exist and they are rather ugly.
