Samsung has announced an upgraded version of its HMD Odyssey Windows in mixed reality, called HMD Odyssey +. As expected, the upgrade takes the form of a new screen, featuring Anti-Screen Door Effect (Anti-SDE) technology. The display resolution remains the same as that of the original headset (2880 × 1600), but the anti-SDE technology will reduce the chance that users will see spaces between pixels.

The effect of screen door is one of the major disadvantages associated with virtual reality headsets. Despite a high pixel density of 1,233 pixels per inch on the AMOLED 3.5-inch dual displays inside the HMD Odyssey +, the proximity of the user to the displays means that pixelation can be visible in various types of content. The effect of the mosquito net door can also cause dizziness or nausea in some people. According to Samsung, the anti-SDE AMOLED screen works by applying "a grid that diffuses the light from each pixel and reproduces the image on the areas around each pixel". The Odyssey + also has wider viewing areas (146mm vs. 138mm on the original). to better marry the eyes of the user, with a breathable anti-fog material on the padding of the face that prevents fogging around the eyes.
The rest of the features is carried forward from the first Odyssey. You benefit from AKG audio quality optimized with 360-degree surround sound, built-in dual microphones that support Cortana, a 110-degree field of view, and a 90-Hz refresh rate for dual AMOLED displays. The HMD Odyssey + comes with two six-degree-of-freedom (DOF) motion controllers for a full range of three-dimensional motion, as well as HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports for connecting to a Windows computer. It also supports the Steam VR platform.
The Odyssey + will go on sale in the US today for $ 499.99 from Microsoft Store and Samsung.com. Availability will be extended to Korea, China, Hong Kong and Brazil, among others, at some point.
