Samsung is supposed to work on a Galaxy watch this year

Samsung's smartwatch line has been under the Gear brand since 2014, but this year rumors suggest that Samsung could trade this for something better known – the name Galaxy. More interesting than the name change is what this change could mean for the smartwatch itself.

The strongest sign of the name change comes from a trademark filing in Korea, spotted by SamMobile on a logo for "Samsung Galaxy Watch" – a product that does not have a name. does not exist yet. An earlier rumor, though utterly unfair, of a whistleblower on Twitter, also said that the watch could go under the name Galaxy

the name change may not mean much. The Galaxy brand is better known and could help the line to sell better. What's more important is what the Galaxy brand typically means for Samsung: Android. Since 2015, Samsung Gear watches have all a Samsung smartwatch OS. The Galaxy brand might suggest that Samsung returns to Google's camp with the new Wear operating system.

Rumors also suggest it. The same Twitter user who originally mentioned the name of the Galaxy Watch, which follows Ice Universe also stated that the watch would work with the Wear operating system. Previously, Evan Blass of VentureBeat stated that Google had launched Wear OS versions of its Gear watches from Samsung employees to try them out.

That said, there are many reasons to be skeptical next smartwatch will run Wear OS, even if its name is changed. For one, Samsung's Tizen-based smartwatch-based operating system is actually very popular, while the Wear operating system is generally considered more difficult to use. In addition, having its own operating system helps Samsung watches stand out, rather than making them essentially interchangeable with dozens of models offered by Fossil.

So it's very possible that it's just a mix, that several options are offered, or that the name change – again, if it happens – does not indicate a change in OS. But at least at this point, there are clearly rumors in this direction.

Samsung is in the habit of introducing new Gear smartwatches at the very end of August, so there are a lot of rumors on this front next month
