Every year, when Samsung announces a new Galaxy Note phone, I wonder why it sticks to the S Pen, the stylus supplied with Galaxy Note phones of very large size. Indeed, the next Galaxy Note phone, which will debut this fall, will bring back the S Pen for a new go-around.
Surely, this age-old technology – which debuted for most consumers on the Palm Pilot in 1997 – has no place here in 2018.
But I'm very wrong. I was stunned to find that 92% of Galaxy Note 8 owners – the most recent model – are active users of the S Pen, said Drew Blackard, senior director of smartphone marketing at Samsung. And 73 percent of those who bought Note 8 bought the device specifically for the S Pen.
Blackard said that Samsung did not disclose Galaxy Note sales figures, so it is difficult to know in absolute terms how popular the stylus could be. Still, he told me that more people in the United States pre-ordered the Note 8 when it was announced that any other device rating.

Sixty percent of S Pen users continue to use the S Pen combo and Galaxy Note for simple things like writing lists and notes – the original appeal of the very first Galaxy Note the 2011 model. Some may prefer to write notes with a keyboard on the screen, but others clearly prefer the S Pen to write things down quickly.
Samsung has eased the task to these users, generation after generation, thanks to better technology in the S Pen itself, as the increase in sensitivity to pressure.
