Samsung reveals why its Galaxy Note 8 smartphones still have a stylus | Style magazine

Every year, when Samsung announces a new Galaxy Note phone, I wonder why it sticks to the S Pen, the stylus supplied with Galaxy Note phones of very large size. Indeed, the next Galaxy Note phone, which will debut this fall, will bring back the S Pen for a new go-around.

Surely, this age-old technology – which debuted for most consumers on the Palm Pilot in 1997 – has no place here in 2018.

But I'm very wrong. I was stunned to find that 92% of Galaxy Note 8 owners – the most recent model – are active users of the S Pen, said Drew Blackard, senior director of smartphone marketing at Samsung. And 73 percent of those who bought Note 8 bought the device specifically for the S Pen.

Blackard said that Samsung did not disclose Galaxy Note sales figures, so it is difficult to know in absolute terms how popular the stylus could be. Still, he told me that more people in the United States pre-ordered the Note 8 when it was announced that any other device rating.

the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the 2016 model, has been sadly recalled after the overheating and the explosion of multiple devices , triggering a global recall.

Still, it shows that there is a demand for the Samsung Galaxy Note product line, and it turns out that the majority of people want it for the S Pen.

In this light, it would be wrong for Samsung to drop the S Pen in its Galaxy Note smartphones, as obsolete as they may seem. It would disappoint an overwhelming number of S Pen fans on a device that is a "central element" of Samsung's high-end strategy, says Blackard

So, what do these S Pen loyalists know? that I do not know? And why do they really need it?

Sixty percent of S Pen users continue to use the S Pen combo and Galaxy Note for simple things like writing lists and notes – the original appeal of the very first Galaxy Note the 2011 model. Some may prefer to write notes with a keyboard on the screen, but others clearly prefer the S Pen to write things down quickly.

Samsung has eased the task to these users, generation after generation, thanks to better technology in the S Pen itself, as the increase in sensitivity to pressure.

Samsung launches the Galaxy S9 in response to Apple's iPhone X [19659002] The Galaxy Note 8, the model of last year, has 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, which helps with writing and precise drawing. Compare that to the 256 of the first Galaxy Note. To put this in perspective, a fingertip only has a level or pressure sensitivity. The company has also added features such as "screen off memo," where S Pen users do not even need to wake up their sleep note to write a note.

"More people are using [the S Pen] Blackard added."

And the S Pen has evolved to become more of a tool for some note users. "Many people use it for more accurate navigation of their phone," and even for more accuracy in games, Blackard said. One thing Blackard often does on a Note device is to sign a PDF document and send it back right away. This makes me feel badly done all the time by printing the PDF, signing it, scanning it, and then sending it back to the sender.

Samsung would like to state that it is the world's first with a foldable phone launch 19659002] Then there are users of "creativity" who use the S Pen on a Note device for more artistic purposes. Samsung pre-loads its Note devices with an app called Pen Up, essentially a social sketch network designed for Galaxy Note and S Pen users. The company has an impressive 400 million users on Pen Up who create and share their art on the application since its introduction in the Galaxy Note 3 in 2013. I did not know that people were creating Art – or wanted to create art – a smartphone. But they do it

Generally, "it's really the user who wants to do more, someone who juggles a lot in his life. They spend more time on their device that the standard user, and they do not necessarily want to sit on their computer for other tasks, "said Blackard. This comment has made me think that I do not maybe I'm not really the smartphone user that I thought was, and the real power users are the Galaxy Note fans with their S pens.

For the next Galaxy Note that Samsung is announcing this Autumn, Blackard has given me just a few clues as to what the S Pen will bring in. Expect camera integration and better functionality with games, otherwise we'll have to wait and see.
