In the future, iPhones will have a notch at the top, as Apple made it clear in September when presenting iPhone XS and XR models. The notch is the ugliest thing about the design of the iPhone X, but it's a necessary compromise right now. Samsung, meanwhile, is not a fan of the notch. But the unsightly upper telescope could disappear in the near future with the help of Samsung Display, which would apparently run on a screen that would allow Samsung, Apple, and others to create real all-screen phones.
Most Android manufacturers, with the exception of Samsung, have already copied the design of the iPhone X this year. Some Chinese companies have also explored other all-screen designs by replacing the notch with a sliding camera mechanism. This is certainly not the way forward for Apple and Samsung.
Instead, future iPhones and Galaxy devices may have screens that extend from one corner to another, with no visible cache. The selfie cameras would keep their position at the top of the handset, but they would be placed under the screen.
Samsung Display, which is already the leading supplier of screens for iPhone X, is already developing screen technology to place the camera under the screen, according to advice received by @Samsung_News_:

Earlier this year, Samsung demonstrated prototype screens that transmit sound through the bone, eliminating the need for a loudspeaker at the top of the handset. The upper enclosure also occupies a lot of space inside the notch. The above image also refers to this technology.
Samsung, whose all-screen phones feature Infinity displays with upper and lower frames, wants to eliminate them. It would not be surprising to see screens with cameras built for the first time on a Galaxy S or a note before a future iPhone will get it. But it seems unlikely that the Galaxy S10 has a selfie camera under the screen, considering the rumor mentioned above. Samsung's next flagship product, the Galaxy S10, should already feature a screen with an integrated fingerprint sensor and smaller frames than its predecessors. 'The fingerprint on the display', as Samsung calls it, also appears on the picture disclosed. The above image also mentions a "Haptic on Display" screen technology that would allow Samsung to place buttons on the screen for game purposes.
As for Apple, we already know that the iPhone manufacturer is also studying a technology that would allow it to place all these notch components – including cameras, speakers and sensors – under the screen and make an all-screen iPhone without compromise. However, Apple is expected to launch three iPhone models next year: the direct successors of the iPhone XS, iPhone XR and iPhone XS Max, which will likely carry the same models as the iPhones this year. It took Apple three years to make a major overhaul of the iPhone, retaining the designs of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus 2014 until the day was over. IPhone X appears last year. Assuming that Apple is sticking to a similar timeline for current designs, then 2020 may be the year of the next major overhaul of the iPhone.
