Samsung has been the main support in a year while, apparently, all other smartphone manufacturers have moved to publishing screens with a notch cut. But at the company's developer conference today, Samsung has confirmed that it will soon join the trend. A slide during the speech showed several notch designs that will almost certainly arrive at Samsung branded devices in 2019 and beyond.
Hassan Anjum, director of product marketing at Samsung, took the floor to highlight Samsung's earlier progress in reducing screens and maximizing display size year after year. "We will continue. The glasses will still shrink, "said Anjum. "We are going to push the limits with our new range: the Infinity U, V and O screens. These are new concepts that are just around the corner, and I can not wait to tell you more about them. "
- Infinity U: This basically looks like the design of the essential phone notch. It is a small half-oval that is cut in the upper central part of the screen.
- Infinity V: Similar to Infinity U, but with four edges instead of a curved half-oval.
- Infinity O: This notch would be an eccentric circle dug in the inside from the display – not on the top edge. It sounds like a horror and it's hard to imagine a very positive reaction. Asus seems to be exploring a similar idea for his ZenFone 6, and the comments have been extremely bad.
- New Infinity: This seems to be a completely uncompressed display. Anjum did not discuss this one on stage, and the technology is not yet developed to allow this design. That said, Samsung could explore the idea of a slider phone that can accommodate the selfie camera and other components somewhere outside their usual location.
So, enjoy the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 when they are here because they represent the latest generation of Samsung smartphones with traditional design.
It is not possible to ignore the notch.
The notch won.
