The Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue 3 ends with a grand total of $ 7,179,510 USD from exactly 81,087 contributors. This is in addition to the $ 6,333,295 from Kickstarter's original 2015 campaign, which made the game the most funded project on the crowdfunding platform at this stage.
Despite the success, creator of the series Yu Suzuki was not satisfied with the funds raised and looked for other ways to finance the project. His reasoning for needing additional support was to make Shenmue 3 to live up to his great vision. He even reopened the initial Kickstarter via Paypal for a "lazy support" period.
This last campaign ended with the following message from Suzuki himself:

Shenmue 3 This will be the third installment of the series since its launch in 1999. The first and second games have been remastered and re-released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC earlier this year.
Deep Silver announced the release date of the game at Gamescom. So we know Shenmue 3 The release is scheduled for August 27, 2019 on PS4 and PC.
