Ys Net has again made headlines. This time, the company is back in the news for breaking the crowdfunding mold and generating a lot of money for the upcoming release of Shenmue 3 on PS4 and PC.
On the Kickstarter page, production staff explain that the crowdfunding project has brought together more than 81,000 contributors and generated more than $ 7.1 million in total funding. It's an awesome shot for a game like Shenmue 3, apparently out of nowhere after making waves at a first ad on stage at a Sony 2015 press conference.
Designer Yu Suzuki came on stage to announce that Shenmue 3 would be funded by Kickstarter, and that he would receive additional support from Sony to complete the development. He claimed that he needed about $ 10 million to make the full product, as he had envisioned for the third outing, but the race was slow to reach the $ 7 million mark. dollars. Initially, the Kickstarter ended in July 2015, after its launch in June. The team managed to accumulate $ 6 million of crowdfunding from players, but continued some off-site crowdfunding through the official website. Shenmue Web portal.
It is through the website that the team has raised an additional $ 1 million in crowdfunding for game development, moving closer to this coveted $ 10 million goal. What we do not know is if Suzuki needed $ 10 million in crowdfunding to bring Shenmue 3 up to a certain investment goal to receive additional funding, or if $ 10 million would be enough to develop the game in full.
Suzuki did not explain exactly how much Sony or the others were going to contribute to the project. So we know that Sony could have given the impression that if the team reached $ 10 million in crowdfunding, it would bring him $ 10 million more. Or, if Suzuki had reached $ 5 million or more in crowdfunding, Sony would provide the rest so that the Ys Net team could complete the development with the $ 10 million target.
Whatever the case may be, the development has been slow and methodical. Screenshots and trailers have been released to give players a glimpse of the evolution of character development, environments, combat mechanisms and exploration.
We did not really see a lot of gameplay, but we were teased with what it could be. The game is still in 10 months, Ys Net having delayed the release of the game from April 2019 to August 27, 2019 for the PlayStation 4 and on Steam for PC.
The system requirements for the game are also quite steep, requiring 100 GB of disk space. Some think that this is due to 4K resources, which usually corresponds to the time of Xbox One X games when they activate 4K enhancements.
However, Shenmue 3 joins a short list of illustrious crowdfunding projects that raised more than $ 5 million in community funding. It's still far from Star Citizen, which has managed to reach $ 200 million in crowdfunding, an unprecedented amount for an independent project done outside the field of financing traditional publishers.
You can get your hands on Shenmue 3 from the middle of 2019 the next year.
