Skydio R1 is a stand-alone drone designed and programmed to take flight and capture a subject in action – no manual control is required. The new Skydio app for Apple Watch takes the key features of the iPhone application and eliminates the need to keep your phone in hand after takeoff.
For example, you can launch R1 from the Skydio app on iPhone, then use the Apple Watch app to scroll through the people it recognizes for tracking. The Watch app can not show you a live preview of what R1 is capturing and the phone should still be nearby, but the watch can present snapshots of people in its field of view for be able to follow them (or recommend you camera if no one is in sight).
Once you have taken off, you can use the new app to view the remaining battery percentage of Skydio R1, change the flight mode and end the flight from Apple Watch. You can even use the Digital Crown on Apple Watch to easily flip Skydio R1 during the flight.
Skydio R1 includes a variety of modes to control how it captures video and moves around you during the flight. I have tested the Skydio R1 control on my Apple Watch during an outdoor bike ride and found the new application for watches very useful. For cycling in particular, mounting the iPhone is always useful for viewing live what Skydio is recording, but putting the iPhone in your pocket or bag makes the experience more immersive if you run or hike. .
Skydio R1 is very effective in following you even in tight bends while avoiding obstacles such as trees, and it can be very convenient to quickly change the flight mode from the watch without using the phone. The simplest example is simply to switch from one mode to the other: the way Skydio R1 flies around you: in front of, behind or beside you – and the proximity with which it stolen.
The autonomous drone offers a variety of flight options, such as a rocket that captures an aerial shot, an orbit to hover around you from multiple angles and a tripod to stay in a fixed location and track your movements.
The captured video has superb 4K resolution and the built-in USB-C port makes it easy to transfer videos to new MacBooks. Skydio R1 is limited to 16 minutes of flight time, but it is not difficult to change the battery from one flight to another.
Skydio R1 is priced at $ 1,999 and will be available in select Apple stores starting today. The new Skydio app for Apple Watch is also launched today. Stay tuned on the sister site of 9to5Mac, DroneDJ, to learn more about Skydio R1 soon.
