The Google Assistant was originally supposed to arrive on the Sonos speakers this year. As a consolation, Sonos will allow users to test it as part of a private beta.
Bad news for those who have Sonos speakers. The Google Assistant will only be available on your devices next year.
Sonos had originally planned to integrate Google's voice assistant into its smart speakers in 2018. But the seller announced Thursday that it had to postpone the schedule.
"In reality, we need a little more time to gain the experience we need, we will now look to set a date for 2019, and we continue to progress satisfactorily," the company said. in a blog post.
As a consolation, Sonos will allow interested customers to test the integration of Google Assistant as part of a private beta. You can register here. "We are asking beta testers to commit to listening at least 14 hours a week, using 10 voice commands a day, and responding to inquiries within 72 hours," the company said.
Sonos plans to conduct the next beta test with a few hundred homes, then a few thousand of them, over the next few months.
The Sonos One and Sonos Beam Stakeholders were originally expected to support Google Assistant this year, providing an additional way to control them with voice commands. Currently, both devices only support Amazon Alexa and Apple's AirPlay.
Sonos did not give much details about why integration took so long. In his blog, Sonos simply stated: "Together with Google, we have learned a lot and are certain that the integration is worth it."
