Shortly after launching an open API, Sonos lost little time to partner with a big name IoT. Sonos has announced that its platform is now compatible with IFTTT, which opens a wide range of options for integrating your speakers into your smart home setup. For now, the IFTTT feature is launched in beta, which means you're a bit limited in what you can do with it.
For example, Sonos can only be used as the action of your IFTTT recipe, which means that you can not use music yet to trigger other actions. You can, however, use IFTTT to do things like play music when you arrive at the end of the day, or stop playing music when the location data tells you to leave the house. Sonos says you can even ask your speakers to play music when your Dominos pizza order is on delivery, which is certainly an interesting idea.
The actions you have at your disposal include basic playback controls such as pause, resume, next and previous, as well as volume controls, including up, down, mute, and mute. When you insert Sonos into an IFTTT recipe as an action, you can choose a specific song or favorite to play, although full albums and artist playlists are also supported. With all this, you certainly have plenty of options to incorporate music into your IFTTT routines.
You can create your own applets or recipes, but if you can not find interesting ways to insert your music, you can check the Sonos IFTTT page for predefined applets. This page tells you what type of IoT device or application you should use to make the recipe, and although there are only about 20 applets available at the moment, we can probably expect that that this page develops over time.
