Sony sued a Californian man for selling jailbroken PS4s on eBay and on his own website. According to TorrentFreak, Eric Sales sold jailbreaked consoles with more than 60 preloaded pirated games bypassing the PS4 protection measures.
Sales is accused of copyright infringement and circumvention of technological protection measures of PS4. He would have encouraged people to "stop buying games". It is believed that this is the first trial of this type against PS4 jailbroken. The potential damage should reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The console makers, Sony and Nintendo, have recently released sales reports, with the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch being within reach of their immediate predecessors. 82.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold between a November 2013 launch and a July 2018 financial report detailing June 30 shipments.
Sony stopped reporting its PlayStation 3 sales in 2013. It was forecasting a total of 17 million PlayStation 4 sales for the fiscal year ending in March 2019. As for Nintendo, Sony's Japanese console company reported 19.67 million sales of its Switch console between its launch in March 2017 and the end of its last fiscal year, June 30, 2018.
Both consoles are far from the title of the achievements of their builders. For Sony, it would be the PlayStation 1994 (102 million) and the PlayStation 2 of the year 2000 (more than 155 million), and for Nintendo, the Nintendo DS 2004 (154 million), of the 1989 Game Boy and its successor, Game Boy Color, which achieved a combined total of 118 million sales, and the 2006 Wii, with a total of 101 million.
