In an announcement that will not surprise anyone, but many people, Sony has revealed that the PS Vita will stop production next year in Japan, the largest market of the portable console.
The news comes months after Sony's equivalent departments in the United States and Europe announced a late-March 2019 production deadline for PS Vita, while PS Vita Playing Cards must be completed by the end of 2018.
Although the PS Vita console never really took off – partly because of the growing popularity of the Nintendo DS family and accessible games for smartphones – Japan was its most lucrative market and the end of manufacturing not project for a successor.
Our tears are somewhat tempered by Sony news PlayStation Classic: a compact version of the original PlayStation console in the style of the Nintendo NES Mini, with 20 PS1 games that will be released in time for Christmas 2018.

With the laptop game clearly dominated by the mobile and the Nintendo Switch, it's easy to forget Sony's position in the market.
The first portable console from Sony, the PSP, was the older kid, smoother than the clumsy Nintendo DS, and the progressive growth of the latter at the expense of the first was a fascinating development that defied the predictions of many experts regarding the war of the portable consoles.
Although it never really became a bestseller, the PS Vita had good games, while its "remote reading" feature allowed players to broadcast PS4 Games at its reduced screen – although most PS4 owners have never used this feature.
With the PlayStation Classic console that should occupy us in the near future, there is more than a slim chance that we can see a portable Vita Classic emerge with the best handheld games and years of nostalgia. But before we can hope for a resurrection, we will have to go through funerals.
