If you have included some of your family members, say extended family, in your Spotify family plan membership, a calculation may be taking place soon.

Spotify is contacting some subscribers to its Premium for Family plan by asking them to confirm that family members all reside at one address via GPS, according to several media articles and social media posts.

"If you do not confirm, you may lose access to the plan," say the emails.

The streaming service began offering Family Plan four years ago, allowing subscribers to add up to five additional users who reside at the same address for $ 14.99 per month. These users receive the service as do the monthly $ 9.99 Premium Plan subscribers, which contains no ads and allows you to skip tracks and download music for offline listening – upgrades significant compared to Spotify's free service.

However, some family plan users have recently received emails from Spotify asking them to confirm their personal address using GPS, according to articles published on Twitter and reports published in Quartz and Spiegel Online.

Many users commenting on the situation noted that not all families live in the same house, and many have members living in different locations, even abroad.

Such a location requirement, should it be applied permanently, could be considered contrary to a recent agreement with Ancestry.com to encourage users to listen to music based on their DNA – an experience that could bring music together of the whole world.

Some said the decision could make them consider Apple Music, which has a similar family plan at the same price. "Pretty aggressive", that is how Philip Battin, Google's leader, characterized Spotify's decision on Twitter in his post showing Spotify's view.

For its part, Spotify does not confirm the process and has proposed this statement in response to a request regarding the situation of the family plan.

"Spotify is currently testing improvements to Premium for Family's user experience with small groups of users in certain markets," the site adds. "We are always testing new products and experiences at Spotify, but have no news to share regarding this particular feature test."
